ZEBEDEE, James (Jim) Douglas

March 23, 1944 – Calgary, Alberta
December 5, 2018 – Okotoks, Alberta

Jim Zebedee, beloved husband of Carol of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at the age of 74 years.

Jim was born in Calgary, AB but spent the majority of his early life in Nanton, AB. Jim moved back to Calgary in 1966 to begin his career with the Calgary Police Service. He and Carol were married on January 6, 1968 and they had three children Tracy, Troy, and Jason. Jim’s biggest accomplishment was his family. He adored his wife, children, and grandchildren as well as the four-legged friends who shared his journey. Another accomplishment was his tenure with the Calgary Police Service where he retired as Sergeant after thirty years of service.

Jim’s life was filled with adventure. He travelled frequently, and he would say that he could never have a bad vacation. Each one was an experience in itself. One of his most memorable vacations was the Mediterranean Cruise where he visited Rome, Malta, the Greek Islands, and Turkey. Where ever the plane landed, Jim easily made friends and was fascinated by other cultures. Some friends made abroad would become lifelong friends.

Jim also thoroughly enjoyed fishing in Alaska and Mexico. He was an avid adventurer, spending as much time as possible outdoors whether it was camping, fishing, or hunting; each trip created lasting memories for everyone involved. He also loved movies – one of his favourite being Jeremiah Johnson, which he would gently encourage everyone to watch once in their lifetime. Jim was an avid reader; each novel took him on more voyages and adventures.

His weaknesses were few: chocolate turtles, piggy puffs, and Teen Burgers. He also may have had a weakness for green-eyed, long-haired beauties (Carol). People were instantly drawn to his magnetic personality; they were often entertained by his whimsical quips.

Some of Jim’s noteable quotes were:
“Don’t trip over your lip”
“Keep your stick on the ice”
“Build a bridge and get over it”

When having great times or having a great day he would say, “Well, I wonder what the poor people are doing today?” He was so thankful each and every day and recognised his good fortune. It was his subtle way to remind us to be happy with what we have.

Jim frequently referenced his grandfather’s poem, “Life is a funny proposition, isn’t it?”

Besides his loving wife, Carol, Jim is survived by a daughter, Tracy Lavery; two sons and daughters-in-law, Troy and Simone, Jason and Susan; and six grandchildren, Tyler, Brendan, Tristan, Kaeden, Sadie, and Torin, all of Calgary. He is also survived by two brothers and sister-in-law Bob and Reg (Karin); nephew Cale Zebedee, and niece Katie Zebedee. He was predeceased by his parents Reginald and Alvina.

A family service will be held. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1331 – 29 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 4N2 Telephone: 1 (866) 412-4222. www.albertacancer.ca/memorial. Thank you to all our friends and relatives for their prayers, love, and support. Thank you to Dr. Monzon and all the nurses and healthcare professionals at the Tom Baker, Palliative Care and Home Care for their sincere best care. Thank you to the entire staff of Foothills Country Hospice for their compassionate care of Jim and the entire family.

In living memory of Jim Zebedee, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  11. Carol and family:
Our hearts are with you during this time. What a long hard fight. I have so many memories when we were young. Tommy and I and George were all close in age to Jim and Bob and later Murray and ~Reg.
Mom and Vina often did turns babysitting or spent time working together on many other things. So as children we spent time together. At the farm I mostly remember Dad busting a toy rifle or two over all our butts because we went hunting up the road in spring when the ditches were high with runoff. Suffice to say, that was the first hunting expedition that went south on Jim and the rest of us. Toy rifles were wrecked of course. A fine cousin and friend.
Regards and memories from Jerry and Linda Blake.

Jim was great and so much fun to have at our all functions – a great team with Carol – we were blessed to enjoy their immense hospitality at their home, and were thrilled to return the favor. We had a great time together at a couple of Stampedes didn’t we!! There will not be a family or work function that we will have that Jim’s presence will not be felt. Nick and Rose also send all their best wishes. All our love to Carol and all the family,

  23. I have know Jim practically his whole life. Our fathers were in the Service together. I went to elementary school with Jim in Nanton and I served along side Jim on the Calgary Police Service. Jim was the consummate gentleman, treating everyone he met with respect and concern. His obituary so aptly reflected his compassion for his fellow man. It also revealed that Jim lived life to the fullest, traveling, fishing reading and spending quality time with a family he was obviously devoted to. God could ask no more, so He said, ‘job well done, your Crown is waiting.’ There are no real words to help those left behind, only remember, Jim is not gone, just gone before. May his many wonderful memories sustain you both now and in the years ahead. Ray and Sandie McBrien

Jim was my first team Sgt, in 6-3 after I graduated recruit class. He taught me so much about policing (and other interests) during my time working for him. Those team days at the Etherington Creek group camp, and trips to wholesale sports to pick up the latest fishing magazine are going to be lasting memories of mine. Jim always had a smile, and nothing ever seemed to upset him. He is going to be missed.

We developed a friendship and a greater respect for Jim during our 15 year acquaintance. Jim has passed on his legacy of values, integrity, work ethic, character and love to his family and grandchildren. Jim had an wonderful personality and a good sense of humour. He enjoyed life and was always upbeat despite adversities. We cherish of him recounting stories of his fishing and hunting experiences, his travels and his family life. We will sorely miss him. Jim didn’t like driving patrol cars so when he and was in charge of 6-3 and I of 6-1 he would knock on my door and say ” you drive and I’ll pay for the ice cream ! ”
He also didn’t like computers too much so if he needed something looked up he variably asked me to do it ! We had some great laugh together !
Carol and family my deepest condolences. Gone too soon. Arie
