ZAWALYKUT, Jeffrey (Jeff) Edward

May 28, 1967 – Calgary, Alberta
July 26, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts, the family announces the sudden passing of Jeffrey Zawalykut of Calgary on Thursday, July 26, 2018, at the age of 51 years.

Jeffrey was born in Calgary, AB to the late Edward and Rose Zawalykut and was the oldest of three children. He was active growing up playing minor hockey in Lake Bonavista, winning the city championship in his PeeWee year, and the provincial championship with the Bantam Colts Football. Jeff continued to enjoy playing football and wrestling in high school graduating from Bishop Grandin High School. Jeff took an interest in both the cell phone and IT industries and enjoyed working as an IT consultant. He found his real passion refereeing minor hockey and as a lead mentor to budding young referees. This was his way of giving back, and he thoroughly enjoyed the referee community and fellowship. He also enjoyed spending time riding his motorcycle, even spending a short period of time racing. Jeff was a kind and caring person always putting others first, willing to help anyone and never expecting or asking for anything in return. He had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh and make others laugh. As the oldest brother of three, Jeff was very caring and loving, and always the protector. Jeff was a loving father and so very proud of his children. He recently became a grandfather, blessed with a grandson.

Jeff is survived by his two children, Denna (Ted), Jeremy (Courtney); grandson, Oliver; brother, Rod (Yvonne); and sister Corrie; his six nieces and nephews, Brianna, Jessie (Ryan), Jack, Hannah, Brayden, Riley; and many extended family and friends. Jeff touched the lives of many and will be dearly missed.

He was predeceased by his parents Edward and Rose.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Monday, August 6, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. Reception to follow at the funeral home.

  5. When we think of our great game of hockey we often forget the importance of referees.
Jeff was not only one of Central Zone’s more experienced officials, he also spent many hours dedicated to the growth and development of our younger officials.
Being assigned weekend tournaments with Jeff was always fun as we shared many laughs between games. He was quick to bring home made food for everyone as he set up his crock pot in the corner of the room.
We’ll all miss you Jeff. God Bless.

  23. My deepest condolences to the family. I was shocked and greatly saddened to hear of Jeff’s passing. Jeff was one of the most giving and genuine people I’ve been blessed with meeting. His love of the game of Hockey was only surpassed by his concern for those he met as co-lovers of it. Jeff was a volunteer who was there for the “right reasons”. Not to get ahead for any political reasons but for a genuine desire to help the people involved.
When I had a stroke two years ago, Jeff was one of a handful of folks who made sure to follow up personally and frequently to see that I was recovering and was genuinely caring.
The world has lost a great man, friend, and father. Rest In Peace my friend.

Jeff will be truly missed and our thoughts are with his family, his friends and the reffing community he was so much a part of.

  33. I had a great time wresting with Jeff in high school. A few years later we used to laugh our heads off over beers talking about how he used to throw me around at will. He used to be able to “pick the corner” better than anyone in street hockey as well. I miss those days.

I started out my first game shy on my whistle and hesitant to make any call. When Jeff was there for my second game and guided me to be harder on my whistle and more confident not only in my calls but also in my positioning and overall game play. In an hour Jeff helped me take the leap from being a hesitant referee to one that is confident.
    Rest easy Jeff.
