YOUNG, Peter Russell

May 8, 1927 – Eastend, Saskatchewan
December 12, 2018 – Edmonton, Alberta

Peter Russell Young of Edmonton, Alberta, passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at the age of 91 years.

Peter  was born in Eastend, Saskatchewan on Mother’s Day, 1927. He was the only son of Ernest Daniel (Pop) Young and Matilda Mazzocchi. Peter grew up in Banff, and along with his parents and sister Kay, spent much time enjoying the outdoors. He attended the University of Alberta, graduating with a degree in Agricultural Science. He went to work in the Peace country where he met his wife to be, Eileen Kowalchuk, a school teacher in Beaverlodge. His career path took him and his growing family to North Dakota, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Grande Prairie and Calgary. In his mid-thirties, Peter began a study of religious principles and values which led him to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a keen genealogist. He and Eileen served three church missions. His family well remember his many homilies including, “Happiness is more often remembered than experienced”, and “We judge others by their actions and ourselves by our good intentions.” In his twilight years, the one which resonated most fully was, “We grow so soon old and so late smart.” Peter was a prodigious keeper of journals and loved camping, skiing, hiking and gardening, interests he passed on to his family. He always had a twinkle in his eye for his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Peter is survived by his wife, Eileen; their four children, Coleen Schneider (Oliver), Hu (Diane), Karyn Redd (Jim), and John (Heather); eighteen grandchildren and their respective spouses; and thirty great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his sister, Kay and granddaughter, Gracie.

Interment will take place at the family burial plot at the Old Banff Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in the spring at a date to be determined. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

    Dear Young Family,
Peter was a man for all season’s. Full of integrity and weighing his opinions carefully, I admired him as a leader and as a friend. My life is richer because of his work as a seventy when I was investigating the Church.

  5. To the Young Family

President Gordon B. Hinckley once said, (paraphrase) ” Every new member needs a friend, a responsibility and be taught the good work of God.” When my sister, Hilda, and I were new members, Peter and Eileen extended their hands of fellowship to us. They were so kind, sincere, genuine, unassuming, no guile that we felt right at home. It just seem so natural for them to take the YSA sisters under their wings. They also nourished us by the good word of God, in classes and by their example. We feel a deep gratitude to Peter and Eileen to help us see the Gospel in action. They probably had not thought much of their good deeds, but we the benefactors will remember them forever. It’s my privilege to have known Peter. His legacy will live on through his posterity.

  7. Nancy and Mary Schneider :

We remember Peter as being very kind and helpful at every opportunity.
He and Eileen worked so hard in the kitchen at Mary’s 80th birthday party in Raymond even though we hadn’t asked them but had forgotten to get enough kitchen helpers .
We are grateful for all the hard work he did throughout his life in setting a great example and raising a fine family. His legacy will continue to live on through them.

  8. Mary and Nancy Schneider :

We remember Peter as being a very kind and helpful person at every opportunity. When he and Eileen attended Mary’s 80th birthday party in Raymond they readily helped in the kitchen when it became apparent that we had not found enough kitchen helpers and didn’t have time to do it ourselves
He was always so patient and helpful whenever we visited.
We are grateful for all the work he did in serving the Lord and in rearing a wonderful family. His legacy will live on through them.

What an amazing legacy Peter has left behind for his many descendants. In my young adult years I was often a guest in the Young home, stopping overnight on my way to my parents’ home. Peter and Eileen were always so welcoming, and full of wisdom that they freely shared. I know he will be sadly missed by many. May the happy memories sustain your family through the coming days.

To the Young family: So very sorry to learn of the passing of Peter. He was such a fine man and I always enjoyed his comments in GD class. One of his comments I recall is: Meekness is poise under pressure. I think I have that right..
