September 10, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta
Margaret passed away on Monday, September 10, 2018 at the age of 82 years.
Margaret received numerous awards for community service with Lions Club International including Progressive Melvin Jones Awards for Distinguished Service. She was recognized provincially with an Alberta Centennial Medal for volunteerism in 2005.
As a young woman Margaret joined the Canadian Air Force for interesting work and travel. After her marriage she had employment in banking, finance, and managerial services. Margaret’s greatest role was being a volunteer for over 40 years with various organizations. She loved to organize functions and keep track of the details.
Margaret was a voracious reader, knitter and traveller. She loved golfing, curling and card games with friends and family.
Margaret had a long career with the Lions Club and was a Past District Governor. Most recently she served as Secretary and Treasurer for the Lions of Alberta Foundation.
Margaret had many favourite sayings and was hilariously funny. She used to say, “I was vaccinated with a broken compass needle”, whenever she was lost or was asked to give directions. She also said “I grew up on an island (MacKenzie Island, ON) and I vowed to travel every chance I got.” Live, Love, Laugh.
Margaret is survived by her daughters Betty Ann Adams of Calgary and Cynthia Amerongen (Robert) of Fort McMurray; son Robert Young (Tammy) of Petawawa; grandchildren Karyann Dorn (Jason) of Calgary, Lisa Amerongen of Toronto, Andrew Adams of Calgary, Sarah Amerongen of Vancouver, Alexander Young (Lindsay) of Petawawa, and Madison Young of Petawawa; great-grandchild Miller Young of Petawawa; sister Helen Skavinsky of Osoyoos and Evelyn Stanley (Tom) of Assiniboia; many nieces and nephews; and long time friends Bob and Rena Garland, Steve and Jeanne Connell, and Ray and Adele Coates who provided love and friendship for over thirty-five years.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband Donald Young in 2004, who she met in Nova Scotia and married in 1957. She is also predeceased by her parents Charles and Lorraine Faulkner, her son Charles, granddaughter Ginny Young, and son-in-law Ray Adams.
