YONT, Louise Marie (nee Saunders)

July 5, 1938 – Trail, British Columbia
April 30, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Louise passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at the age of 80 years following a lengthy battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Louise was born in Trail, BC on July 5, 1938 and later moved with her family to Kimberley where she graduated from High School. With her sister Shirley, she then moved to Calgary, AB where they both found employment in the oil and gas industry. During her career with Skelly Oil, she was actively involved with the Desk & Derrick Club of Calgary, becoming President in 1967. Her daughter would later join the same organization. Oil and gas also introduced Louise to her husband Don. They married in 1967 and she soon after retired from the industry. In 1972, they welcomed their daughter Marcie into the family.

Louise was an excellent seamstress; she knitted, crocheted, and sewed many items for her friends and family, including dresses, sweaters, and afghans, just to name a few. Louise found a new passion when computers came out in the late 80s and she quickly became versed in a variety of programs. For many years, she ran a successful computer services business out of her home.

Louise’s great joy was being on the golf course. She was an active member of the Maple Ridge Ladies Club for over 30 years, serving on the Board in many roles, including President. Besides golfing holidays, Don and Louise also went on many cruises with her sister Shirley and brother-in-law Jack. Their travels took them to many ports of call throughout Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, USA, Canada, and the Panama Canal.

Louise was a loving mother and grandmother. She attended all of Marcie’s gymnastics competitions, basketball games, band performances, and all the volunteering and fundraising that went along with it. She took great pride in telling people her daughter had been accepted into the Calgary Stampede Showband.

Louise is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Don Yont, her daughter and son-in-law Marcie and Dave Jensen, and granddaughter Laura Jensen. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Arline Uiska of Nanton, AB, Shirley Weber of Saskatoon, SK, Lorna Yont (Len Lebel) of Mt. St. Gregoire, PQ; and brothers-in-law, Jack Wilson of Langley, BC and Bill (Anita) Yont of St. Albert, AB; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Louise was predeceased by her parents James and Bernadina Saunders, her sister Shirley Wilson, and her brothers-in-law John Uiska and Mel Weber.

A Celebration of Louise’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.

  4. To Don and family our hearts go out to you for your loss. As a kid I recall Louise as a fun auntie with a warm smile, an easy unforgettable laugh, who – exotically – drove a convertible, usually with the top down. We will all miss her.
