WOODS, Julia

January 1, 1933 – West Bend, Saskatchewan
November 12, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Julia Woods of Calgary passed away on Monday, November 12, 2018 at the age of 85 years.

Julia was born on January 1, 1933 in West Bend, SK and was raised on the family farm.  She was viewed by all who knew her as one of the kindest and most considerate people they ever met.  Julia worked hard throughout her lifetime starting when she left school in Grade ten to work on the farm and to raise her younger brother.

Julia married the love of her life, Michael Trembicki, on July 11, 1953 and started their family the following year.  Mike was a school teacher and during the first 9 years of their marriage he worked at various country schools in rural Saskatchewan. The family lived in a small three room teacherage next to the one room school house.

Julia started her varied career when the family moved to Craik, Saskatchewan in 1963.  She worked as a nursing assistant and later as the medical receptionist and assistant at the doctor’s office in Craik.  In 1971 she took the bold and unheard of step by moving to Calgary with her two girls to make a better life for themselves.

Through hard work and dedication, Julia became a self made woman educating herself while working two jobs to support her family and taking evening classes.  She went on to obtain her diploma course in Social Work at Mount Royal College and completed further studies at the University of Manitoba.  She worked for the Federal Government of Canada from 1971 until her retirement in 1997.

She held various positions starting as a Clerk typist and in 1975 advancing to a social services administrator with the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, as it was then known.  She then changed positions in 1981 to an area counselor for the Department of Veterans Affairs until she retired.

Julia had many friends and time with her family was very important to her.  She was an accomplished seamstress and she loved to cook and to garden.

Julia is survived by her children Cynthia Korpatnisky and Donna (Craig) Jones; Brothers Orest (Carol) Kitzul and Eugene (Angie) Kitzul; sisters-in-law Mary Kitzul and Rose Kitzul, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Julia was predeceased by baby Anna; parents George and Mary Kitzul; brothers Joe and Alvin Kitzul; her nephew Corey Kitzul; and her son-in-law Barry Korpatnisky.

Thank you to all the staff at the Valley Ridge Lodge with a special thank you to Marianne, and Dr. Myles and the staff at the Foothills Hospital for their kind and compassionate care.

In living memory of Julia Woods, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  2. Donna and Cynthia like condolences to both of you.
My perception of the memorial service for Julia that it was very well thought out and done as a celebration of Julia’s life.
God bless you both for so much care of attention that you gave to Julia throughout her life. I know she loved you very dearly and always spoke highly of you both.
I certainly enjoyed sharing life’s path with your mother for the years that we did. We had so many lunches and coffees and teas together with somebody long chats. She was truly a gem of a soul. Very warm very engaging and yet very strong.

God bless you Julia for coming to this half of the sky and sharing your life with so many of us in such a loving way.

I know so many of us at the center have tons fond memories of you and the times that we spent together discussing life.

I hope to see you next time around. God bless
