Thomas Edward Wood was born in Gull Lake, Saskatchewan on March 2, 1931 and passed away in Calgary on November 19, 2018 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Tom was predeceased by his father Thomas (Ed) Wood, his mother Frances and his favorite aunt Katy.

Tom was educated at St. Mary’s Boys School in Calgary and attended Washington State University on a track scholarship, graduating as a Geologist. During this time he met the love of his life, Frances, and married her in 1954 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Calgary. After working for Sun Oil Company and Bailey Selburne Oil & Gas, he started his own oilfield consulting firm. He later started Round-Up Well Servicing and Shelby Drilling, which he expanded into the US and ran successfully for over 20 years. Tom also developed the Rosewood subdivision west of Calgary and a land development on the beach in Kauai prior to retiring and moving to Denver and later Flathead Lake, Montana. He later retired in Las Vegas.

Tom and Frances were married for over 64 years and had three children, Debra (Glen), Tom and Angela (Les), along with seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Tom was surrounded by his loving family during his final days. Tom and his family were very close to his cousins, the Coughlin and McElgunn families.

Tom was a beloved father and a great friend to many. He was an entrepreneur, a mentor and a competitor as a keen sports enthusiast. In his early years he played hockey for the Calgary Buffalo Hockey association. He was an avid snow skier and water skier and was committed to fitness his entire life. Tom was a race car enthusiast and enjoyed open wheel racing, even taking in racing schools well in to his 70’s and was a constant fixture at the Indycar series.

Tom will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

  15. So sad to see that Tom is gone. He was always so good to us. I remember that he was so upset with the Canadian government that he threatened to move to the U.S……….And he did! Fr. Whelihan(sp?) would have been proud of Tom. So many good memories, his Achilles heel tear, Frances and Tom and Carolyn and I having lunch in Kensington, and so many more . We lost touch when you guys moved South although I did see Slim a few times after. Due to other commitments we will be unable to attend either prayers or the funeral. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
    Ken and Carolyn Cheryba
