WOOD, Lily Johanna Wilhelmina (nee Janssen)

January 21, 1942 – Nijmegen, Holland
January 13, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Lily beloved wife of Ian Lawrence Wood of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2019 at the age of 76 years.

This is the story of Lily Johanna Wilhelmina Wood (van der Horst/ Janssen). Lily was a wonderful woman who was loved, is missed, and will always be cherished by all those she touched throughout her time. She was an amazing wife, mom, daughter and friend who’s tale eclipsed the last 76 years.

Lily’s story began on January 21, 1942 in Nijmegen, Netherlands during the Second World War, the first child of Anne Van den Berg and Christianus Janssen. Lily was the oldest sister to 12 half brothers and sisters and remained in The Netherlands until 1956 when she immigrated to Canada with her Mother and Step Father (Hans van der Horst). Lily spent her adolescent years in Winnipeg graduating from high school. Shortly after she met the love of her life Larry at the age of 19 and they were married in Charleswood in July of 1963.
Lily had her first 2 children in Brandon, Manitoba with her first son Brent born in 1966 followed by the arrival of her Daughter Lesley in 1968. Her youngest son Jason was born in 1973 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Life’s journey took her back through Winnipeg for 7 years and finally to Calgary in 1980 where she spent the last 38 years of her life.

Her love for her motherland never left her, Lily was always full of stories about her upbringing during the war, her courageous voyage to Canada by sea; and never missed an opportunity to either torment or delight her family with some of the more distinguished tastes of Holland.

Lily’s grand children were her heart and pride. There’s no denying that, Lily took every opportunity to steal hugs and kisses and would never miss an opportunity to share a picture or tell a story about the joy they brought to her life. Then there were her dogs…….the consummate lover of animals, Lily found great joy in all animals big and small, even the ones that her children brought home unexpectedly for very long term “visits”.
Lily’s world could always be fixed or repaired by three things. Spray paint, Fantastic or Polysporin. If that wasn’t the fix it really wasn’t a problem.

Lily was pre deceased by her fathers Christianus Janssen and Hans van der Horst and her mother Anne van der Horst. Lily will be loved and remembered until they meet again by her husband Ian Lawrence Wood; her 3 children Brent Wood (Leanne), Lesley Oliphant (Chris) and Jason Wood (Nelly); and her 14 loving grandchildren Andrew, Ashleigh, Craig, Ben, Christian, Shayanne, Emily, Katie, Nikolas, Elijah, Ethan, Madison, Spencer and Calvin.

And so the story goes on until we see our beloved Lily again. We love you and miss you with all of our hearts..

I will always remember Lilly having the best sense of humor, something she got from her mother possibly. Always a quick wit and easily had the room laughing. She had the ability to criticize and make you feel loved at the same time. Lilly will be missed by everyone she touched in her life.
