WONG, Shui Ching

January 8, 1926 – Toy Shan County, Guangdong, China
July 12, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Shui Ching Wong was born on January 8, 1926 in Toy Shan County, Guangdong Province, China. She passed away on July 12, 2019 at the age of 93. She was a caring and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Shui was deeply loved by everyone and will be greatly missed.

Shui had three sisters and one brother. She grew up in Toy Shan, received basic education and had a happy childhood. At the age of twenty, she married a businessman, Cheong Wong, also a Toy Shan native but he ran his business in Guangzhou. After marriage in 1946, she moved to Guangzhou to live with her husband.

From 1946 to 1958 in Guangzhou, she was a housewife raising five children at home. These were the happiest years of her life. Her husband ran a successful quarry selling stone and sand for building construction. She stayed home ensuring her family had a sweet and stable home.

In 1959, the business environment changed in China. Her husband’s business collapsed and he moved to Hong Kong. She was left alone in Guangzhou with five children waiting for a permit to unite with her husband. Getting a family permit from Guangzhou to Hong Kong was not easy. However, she was able to overcome the hardship and eventually had all five young children settled in Hong Kong.

During the years of 1959 to 1979, Hong Kong was over crowded with immigrants from mainland China. It was hard to make a living. Her husband’s business dwindled and could no longer sustain the family. Shui decided to work in a garment factory to support the family. She worked hard to maintain a stable home and provided what her children needed through all those years. In 1970, her oldest daughter left Hong Kong and married in Brazil.

In 1979, as it was difficult to make ends meet in Hong Kong, Cheong asked Shui to immigrate to Canada. The whole family landed in Montreal and she started to work. Three years later in 1982, Shui and family moved to Calgary for better opportunities. She worked, retired and lived in Calgary until she died.

Shui had a good life in Canada. Her four children married and raised their own families in Calgary. She is survived by her four children, twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. They will forever remember her.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), on Friday, July 19, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
