WONG, Marjorie Hisa

July 18, 1917 – Victoria, British Columbia
March 15, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mom, grandma, great-grandma and great-great-grandma, Marjorie Hisa Wong at the age of 100 years.

Born and raised in Victoria, BC, she met and married Charles (Chuck) Wong and in 1942, they moved to High River, AB. Marge worked at the High River Times and at their family-owned bakery, Powell’s Bakery. Very community-oriented, Marge helped start the High River Teen Town and choreographed and taught all the dance routines. She later opened her own dance school, Marjorie Wong’s School of Dance, and for over twenty-five years, was a beloved teacher, sharing her love of dance with many young dancers. Marge’s annual recitals showcased jazz, tap and ballet performances and were greeted with rave reviews for their beautiful backgrounds, lavish costumes and talented young dancers. Marge’s own ballet performances brought several encores. During these years, she was credited in local newspapers for contributing substantially to the artistic life of the small town. Marge and Chuck moved to the warmer climate of Kelowna, BC in 1987. Their love of gardening kept them busy in their small fruit orchard and beautiful flower beds until Chuck’s passing in 1990. Marge kept busy after and she actively participated in variety night events with the War Brides Association in Kelowna. She also joined Scottish Country Dance groups in Kelowna and Calgary. She enjoyed travel and ventured to Victoria, Ontario, Hawaii and Japan. In 2000, she returned to Calgary to be closer to her family.

We are blessed and thankful to have celebrated Marge’s 100th birthday last year with family and friends from Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Geraldine and Antony Hobbs, Russell and Frances Wong, and Gloria Lundberg; nine grandchildren, Michele (Sean) Kelly, Cathy Hobbs, Patricia (Brent) Kjinserdahl, Kelly (Mark) Webber, Christopher (Debbie Miles) Hobbs, David (Dawn Prete) Wong, Lisa (Russell Scullen) Wong, Stacie (Jason) Smith and Heather (Bobby) Norman; twelve great-grandchildren, Kendra (Ben) Arkes, Heather Hobbs, Robert Dunbar, Logan Onespot, Joseph Webber, Courtlind Hobbs, Connor and Griffin Wong, Nyla and Garrett Smith, Evan Bishko and Kinu Norman; and one great-great-grandchild Faryn Hobbs. She is also survived by her sister, Sally Smith and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Chuck; parents, Tokusabro and Kinu Kuwata; brothers, George and Fred Kuwata; sisters, Kitty Jay and Patricia Trudeau; great-grandson Jason Kelly; and son-in-law Gerald Lundberg.

She will be forever dancing in our hearts.

Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church (206 – 9 Avenue West, High River, AB) on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at the High River Cemetery. Marjorie Wong was pivotal in my growing up in High River. So many times have I told stories of learning to dance from this woman, and how lucky I was to have had the opportunity in a small prairie town to do so. Always so gentle and kind with us giggling girls!! Thank you Marjorie….

  13. Janice Weir (Pickersgill) :

My condolences to Gloria, Rusty and your families. Mrs. Wong was such a wonderful dance teacher — so patient and caring. Lessons started in the plumbing shop, then moved to her basement. She always had a brown bag of doughnuts from the family bakery for her students after every class. She taught me teamwork and perseverance. Thank you for sharing your love of dance with me, Mrs. Wong.
