WITHELL, Richard Philip

July 31, 1928 – Calgary, AB
August 6, 2017 – Calgary, AB

Richard Philip Withell, beloved husband of Irene Elizabeth Withell of Calgary, AB, passed away on August 6, 2017 at the age of 89 years.
Richard P. Withell was known as Dick to all who knew him; he was married to Irene “Bet” Withell in 1950 and they were married for 67 wonderful years. Dick was a very caring and supportive person who always put family first and he was a great friend to everyone he met. Dick worked at the City of Calgary Land Department for many years to his retirement in 1993. Dick was “introduced” to Kiwanis by his very close friend Joe Northcott when he joined what was then the Kiwanis of Calgary South & East Club in October of 1979; now known as the Kiwanis Club of Calgary Chinook. The club immediately knew that they had a very enthusiastic member, and in two years Dick was elected Club President for his first of three one year terms; 1981, 1990 and 2003. The Club moved forward under his leadership, he also served as the Club Treasurer for three years at various times and as a Club Director for the many years that he was a member.
In the early 1980’s the Club needed another entity which would be capable of issuing income tax receipts and a separate account was opened in the name of “Sinawik” which is the Kiwanis name in reverse. Sinawik is duly registered with Revenue Canada and is capable of issuing receipts for income tax purposes. The sole purpose of Sinawik is to provide financial support for Youth activities and Dick served as Treasurer for Sinawik from its start until 2016.
Dick supported and was active in all the Club’s community activities; to name a few, the Watch Awards program for Grade nine students in Junior High schools, the Kiwanis Music Festival, the Bike giveaway program which provides bikes & helmets for young children in need, the many breakfasts, dinners and barbeques held for various charitable agencies, nursing homes and many others to name a few.
At the Clubs’ annual Christmas party, he was Santa’s Elf helping Santa to get ready for the “grand entry”; the club had a gift exchange which Dick organized and helped Santa distribute the gifts. For many years, Dick called all the members; usually on a Sunday afternoon to remind Chinook Kiwanians of the upcoming meeting and to advise the dinner menu. Dick seldom missed a meeting up until 2015, as he was not able to attend due to failing health. Dick was deeply missed by the club and in March of 2017 he was made an Honorary LIFE Member of the Club in recognition of his many years of service to the Club.
Besides his loving wife, Bet Whithell, Dick is survived by Dick is survived by his family; Bet Withell, his spouse, his nieces, grandnieces, nephews and grandnephews. Dick will be missed by all his family and his many friends in Kiwanis; may he rest in peace. Dick was predeceased by his sisters Phyllis and Verna.
