WISE, Noel Malcolm

December 8, 1927 – Villapuram, India
July 12, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

At 90 years of age Noel passed away peacefully at the Rockyview General Hospital surrounded by his loving wife of 59 years Edna and their two daughters, Sandra and Lynda.

From humble beginnings in a village in India, Noel learned the value of hard work and perseverance. He joined the Navy as a teenager in 1942 and rose through the ranks to retire as Commander after 38 years of service. Calgary became his home in 1980.

Being a perfectionist, every venture Noel undertook had to be “first class”. As Director of Music for twenty-five years, he led the Navy Band in public parks or concert halls, always to high acclaim. He excelled at both team and individual sports becoming swimming champion in 1953. When he was tasked with caring for the Sailor’s Home garden in Bombay, Noel did not have a clue about horticulture. But he quickly became knowledgeable in this field, winning prizes at the annual flower shows. He nurtured this love of plants in his Acadia home of 38 years, always keen to share his knowledge with anyone who would stop by to chat!

Noel has been missed pottering around his garden since he lost his zest for life about a year ago. Indoors, he kept his mind alert playing Bridge online. He had a firm belief in the promises of the Bible about the earthly resurrection and expressed his hope to resume his love of gardening when “All Things are New”.

Afternoon tea will be held at the Carriage House Inn (9030 Macleod Trail South, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Noel Wise, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  23. I met Noel in 1989, as a foolish young man, and he made quite an impression on me.

That we met for an hour, and I remember him 29 years later says something about the man.

Periodically, I’d thought to look him up and reach out. He was a man of great depth, and I sense he made good use of his time here on earth.

    RIP Noel.
