WILSON, William Samuel “Bill”

March 17, 1935 – Calgary, Alberta
November 8, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Bill Wilson, beloved husband of Maralyn Wilson, of Calgary, AB, passed away on November 8, 2018 at the age of 83 years.

Born and educated in Calgary, Bill was introduced to Maralyn by a friend at the age of seventeen, and together they celebrated sixty-three years of marriage. Bill embarked on his career-path at the Calgary Albertan Newspaper as a Pressman and in a short time, was made Production Manager. After which he went on to be a self-employed entrepreneur and a man of many careers, Bill had a pioneering spirit as a farmer, builder, and land developer during the span of his working years. One of his most recognizable local accomplishments was building and part owner of The Port O’Call Inn. Bill was extremely respected and revered in the business community, with many successful joint venture partnerships. With a commanding voice and presence his words always conveyed great depth, wisdom, truth and advice. Earning his wide respect and acclaim from friends, family and colleagues alike. A dignified man with a sharp intellect; he was firm but fair, with an Irish light-hearted sense of humour.

Bill possessed a deep love for the land, farming, and animals – in particular cutting (quarter) horses: This love and dedication was demonstrated in his position as President of the Cutting Horse Association for many years, as well as his induction into the Cutting Horse Hall of Fame. He was dedicated to sailing in BC every spring and fall, enjoyed motorcycles, and actively participated in curling and skiing as well. An avid golfer, Bill had achieved two hole-in-ones, and was a member of the Bearspaw Golf and Country Club. Bill appreciated the opportunities the world presented him in the form of travel, and on many occasions traveled to Northern Ireland – his ancestral home – as well as much of the world with his wife Maralyn and the children. He was also a frequent Snowbird to Henderson, NV, USA, during the winter months with his wife, Maralyn. Bill was a long-time ticket-holder of both the Calgary Flames, and the Calgary Stampeders.

Bill’s deep commitment to the community was exemplified by volunteering over forty years for The Calgary Stampede. He was a Jordan Lodge Free Mason and a member of the Conservative Party. Community involvement was important to Bill.

Besides his loving wife, Maralyn, Bill is survived by his children, Shannon Bachynski (Bob), Dr. Sheri-D Wilson, Lindsay Bell (Barkley Adams); grandchildren, Shana Eriksen, Roberta Bachynski, Courtney Bell (Craig Herauf), Lauren Bell (Jody Rideout); great-grandchildren, Keaton Eriksen and Presley Eriksen; sister-in-law, Carole Mitchell; nephews, Dean Mitchell (Barb), and their children; Kurt Mitchell (Kristi-Lynn), Eric Mitchell and Vanessa Mitchell; nieces, Shauna Mitchell and her children, Kristiana and Mitchell Klaus, Karyn Mitchell. Nephew, Sloan Wilson (Bev) of Milton, ON and nieces Leticia Wilson Cronk (Aaron), their son, Jackson Cronk of Milton, ON; Amber Wilson Czisny (Wayne) of Oklahoma, USA; beloved pet toy poodle, Ginger; as well as several extended family and friends.

Bill was recently predeceased by his brother, Ernest Wilson and sister-in-law, Aurora Wilson.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Maralyn, We are saddened to hear of Bill’s passing and feel very deeply for you and all your family. He was much loved by everyone he knew, so that is a blessing. Wish we could have spent more time with you both over the years, but Connecticut and Alberta were a little far from each other. However, we have always appreciated the way you both kept in touch. You were a very special couple, and I, Marjorie am glad to have been a first cousin to you, Maralyn, and to your sister Carole. I know your children and grandchildren will keep you very busy, but there will always be a special place in all our hearts for dear Bill.
    Fondly,
Marjorie, Peter, and family, especially our son Peter who felt a strong connection to you both via your mutual love of horses.
