WILSON, Stephen (Steve) Wheeler

June 17, 1955 – Odessa, Texas
April 24, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Steve Wilson, 63, of Calgary, Alberta, succumbed to his battle with prostate cancer on April 24, 2019.

Steve was born in Odessa, Texas on June 17, 1955. His family, enticed by the oil boom, relocated to Calgary in 1959. Steve received his BA from the University of British Columbia in 1978 and his LLB from the University of Alberta in 1981. He was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1982 after articling at Howard Mackie, where he spent his career as an associate and partner. He was instrumental in his firm’s merger with Borden Ladner Gervais, where he concluded his career as Senior Counsel. Steve was actively involved in his community. He was a Trustee and Board Member of the Meadows Foundation of Texas. He also served as a Board Member and Vice-Chair of the Foothills Hospital Foundation, Foothills Medical Development Council and Calgary Health Trust. Steve chaired the Cardiac Hybrid O.R. Fundraising Committee 2012, and was recognized as an Honorary Patron of the Calgary Health Trust in 2016.

Predeceased by his father Henry Wilson, Steve is survived by his wife, Lizabeth (Liz) Leuschner and three children: Layton, Rachel and True; his mother, Dorothy Wilson, siblings Margo (Bruce) Macdonald, Virginia (Grant) Hanson, Andrew (Danuta) Wilson and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends fondly remember Steve as emotive, intelligent, connected, joyous, romantic, sometimes long-winded, funny, and engaging. Steve never met a stranger and couldn’t resist a bargain. He enjoyed summers at the farm, winters in Maui, golf, fast cars, and serving and savouring a good meal. His greatest joy, though, was his family – he adored his wife and children, doted on his dog, and tolerated his cat.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Steve’s honour on Thursday, June 27, 2019 from 3:30 – 6:00 PM at the Glencoe Golf and Country Club, 31002 Elbow River Drive SW. Calgary. Friends and colleagues are welcome to join Liz, Layton, Rachel and True. Business Casual please. In accordance with Steve’s wishes, a paddle-out scattering of ashes ceremony will be held in Maui at a later date.
