September 1, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta
Samuel William (Bill) Wilson was born April 25, 1934 in Calgary and passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 1, 2019 at the age of 85 years.
Bill’s early years of school began in Langdon where his parents owned the general store. An accidental explosion tragically took his father’s life, leaving his widowed mother to raise two very young boys on her own. They moved to Calgary where Bill later graduated from high school in 1952. He went on to earn a BSc in Civil Engineering from U of A in 1956 where he met his first wife, Liz. Children, Judy and Wayne, soon followed and the family of four settled in the north-west of Calgary. A third child, Anita, made a surprise appearance some years later and the family temporarily relocated to Waterloo while Bill earned his MASc from their university in 1973.
Following nearly ten years engineering experience at Conforce Products in Calgary, he spent twenty-six years instructing Civil Engineering Technology at SAIT. A very early adopter of technology, Bill was one of the first at SAIT to communicate via modem from his home computer. Some of his favourite memories teaching include the annual spaghetti bridge and concrete toboggan contests.
He loved the time he spent with his children and grandchildren. After his retirement from SAIT in 1991 he became an enthusiastic genealogist. He discovered that his ancestors came to North America from England on the 2nd ship after the Mayflower. He helped organize large family reunions and stayed in touch with many family members both near and far.
Bill enjoyed travel, especially on his BMW motorcycle, taking road trips throughout the province. He shared this hobby with his son, Wayne, dirt-biking together in early years.
His passion for music – particularly classical piano and opera – led him to be very active in Calgary’s music scene, serving in various capacities with the Grand Opera Club of Calgary, the Canadian Music Competitions, and the Kiwanis Music Festival.
Bill was much loved by family and friends and will be sorely missed. His family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care he received by staff at the Wentworth Manor, Granddaughters, and particularly by his devoted friend Dianne LeBlanc.
Bill is survived by his children, Judy (Bear), Wayne (Leanne) and Anita (Jeff); grandchildren, Alex (Bella), Chris (Kate), Stephanie (Matt), Tyler and Evan; great-grandchildren, Paige, Eric, Amber and Marshall; as well as many other cousins and relatives. He was predeceased by his father, John Stanley Wilson in 1938; his brother, Marvin Dale Wilson in 2003; his mother, Edith Braden in 2010, and partner of 20 years, Isobel Temple in 2015.
A brief service will be held graveside at the interment of his cremated remains where public can pay their last respects. The service will take place on Sunday, September 8, 2019 at 10:00 a.m., at the Burnsland Cemetery. Condolences may be forwarded through www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
