    Paula, Jack and Family

I had the great pleasure and good fortune to have Elaine as my legal assistant at the Ballem McDill and MacInnes law firm during the first 14 years of my career.

She taught her “young guys” a lot about the practical aspects of practicing law, addressing our client’s needs and how to handle the usual office political dynamics. Elaine was the matriarch of the firm and knew its history from the beginning.

Elaine was an elegant and classy lady who could also swear with the best of them when the situation called for it – no doubt a reflection of her Saskatchewan roots of which she was so proud.

She was one of a kind and the many “Elaine stories” are legendary and oft repeated among her BMM friends whenever we reconnect.

Over the years Beth and I have continued to remain in touch with Elaine and I will very much miss our conversations. Our telephone calls always started with me saying “Hello Elaine – it’s your old boyfriend calling” to which she always responded “Which one?”.

Regrettably we will both be in Cape Breton on Sunday and will not be able to attend Elaine’s memorial service but we will certainly be there in spirit.

    Rest easy old friend.

    Terry and Beth Hughes

    Dear Paula, Jack and family,

We were so sad to hear the news of the death of Elaine. She was a truly remarkable lady in every sense of that word. She was one-of-a-kind. I joined Ballem,McDill & MacInnes in 1976 and realized very quickly that she in many many ways was the heart of the firm. I always told her that her name should have been first on the letterhead.

She was always elegantly dressed and carried yourself with such incredible style. I once told her that her suit looked as though it had come from the 1950s. She laughed and said that it did!

After she retired I kept it in regular contact by phone. I always also called her on the first of May with her trademark song “Hooray, hooray the first of May, outdoor screwing begins
today!” She had a wonderful but also very wicked sense of humour!

We will be thinking of you all in the coming days and weeks. We will also be at the celebration on Sunday.
