June 28, 1935 – Banff, AB
February 8, 2016 – Calgary, AB

Evelyn Whitelaw, beloved wife of Doug Whitelaw, of Calgary, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 8, 2016 at the age of 80. After battling and surviving breast cancer for 30 years, this third round finally took its toll.

Evelyn was born June 28, 1935 into the Brewster family of Banff, Alberta. Evelyn met Doug in Banff and shortly after their lives took them to Minneapolis, Minnesota and then to Calgary. They enjoyed 52 years of a loving marriage together. Evelyn was an exceptional homemaker and she provided a loving home for her two children Brian and Meghan Whitelaw. Evelyn enjoyed cooking, sewing and quilting and her passion for these resulted in many works of art, highlighting her creative talents. Evelyn also loved to square and round dance, which she did with Doug for many years. In 1977, Evelyn and Doug started ‘Bearspaw Greenery’, a family run nursery which grew poinsettias and bedding plants, and while it was a small business its success could be measured by the many great relationships it nurtured. Evelyn enjoyed travelling and she was able to see many parts of the world including China, New York, Hawaii, Ireland, Scottland and cruises in the Caribbean, Atlantic east coast, Panama Canal and Alaska. Evelyn demonstrated great strength and humor quietly right through her final days at Dulcina Hospice. While Evelyn was quiet by nature she would hope that her many friends and family know that she loved them.

Evelyn will be dearly missed by Meghan (Terry), Brian (Kari), grand children Jessica (Cole) and Justin, great grandchildren, Koen and Austin, her brothers Joe and Jim Brewster, her sister Sheilagh MacGregor and their families. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents Barbara and George, and her husband Doug, their first daughter and her granddaughter Alyssa.

Our family would like extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation to the wonderful attendants, nurses, doctors and volunteers of the Dulcina Hospice who helped make her last days comfortable and blessed. We would also like to thank Kari Whitelaw who was an excellent friend, companion and caregiver to Evelyn.

A Celebration of Evelyn’s life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North) on Friday, February 19, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation or a charity of your choice.

In living memory of Evelyn Whitelaw, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.
