  11. For almost 30 years, I was Butch’s supervisor at Glacier Holdings Ltd. As property care manager, his primary role was keeping the various heating, ventilation and cooling systems in Glacier’s numerous buildings in good working order.
We shared morning coffee breaks every work day. He watched my children grow and my hair thin and, over time, he helped to shape my attitude and approach to life. We would try to solve the world’s problems but it wasn’t easy. So we stuck to doing our respective jobs as well as possible.
I could always rely upon Butch to get the job done promptly and well. I never had to ask him to redo any of his work – it was done perfectly the first time, every time – and he did it with a smile !
I could trust Butch with my vehicle, my personal opinions and my house keys. He was always there when I needed him and always ready for the next job no matter how challenging, late at night, menial or dangerous.
Butch drove from Cochrane to Banff every work day for about 25 years. During the winters, I often worried about him on those cold snow-swept highways but he was a trooper and always found his way safely.
One of my many fond memories of Butch was when he used a manlift to install bird spiking to keep the pigeons off our Sundance Mall building in downtown Banff. Determined to continue accessing their nesting areas on the front of the building, one pigeon aggressively fought with Butch as he was trying to lay the spiking ! Butch prevailed in the end though, but it took several minutes !
I will always consider myself extremely fortunate to have worked with a man of such high integrity, honesty, skill and congeniality. He was an exceptional employee and tradesman and a true friend to all who truly knew him. And as both a former co-worker and a friend, I know just how much Butch will be missed

  21. Butch and Allie have been the best next-door neighbours you could hope for. Over our eight years sharing the front lawn and the back fence, they have been kind and generous to me and my family, an extended family to us, grandparents to my kids, Nic, Nat and Bella, giving life advice, Halloween treats and awe-inspiring Christmas visits filled with glowing angels and heartfelt gifts. They have taken their place among those close to us.
They have cared more about my grass than I have, faithfully mowing, watering, aerating, weeding and fertilizing our joint lawn. I have often felt guilty about all the attention, but have come to realize they couldn’t possibly do it any other way. They have always been ‘we’ kind of people. We have received the fruits of the hard work invested in their envious garden: tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce, carrots, beans. I worked on a farm for years and could never get anything more than an odd strawberry out of my southern Alberta yard, while they were pulling crops like loaves and fishes, and sharing them just as abundantly.
When my son, Nic has tried to reciprocate by shoveling their driveway in winter, they have always insisted on paying him. Even if he protested, they always found a way to put an envelope in the door, or sneak a bill in his hand.
We have had conversations over the fence, on our deck, on their front step and in each others’ homes. We have learned so much from Butch and Allie’s experiences, and appreciate so much their mentorship, wisdom and support. They have helped me raise my kids, and I will be forever grateful. Neighbours, when they are neighbours, go through a lot together. Allie, we are with you, and are saddened by what you are having to go through. Butch was a wonderful man, and an example to others of hardwork, generosity, humility and loyalty. You know that already. He will be greatly missed, and we are honoured to have shared precious time with him. Joan, Nic, Natalie and Isabella Waringer

  23. We will miss our visits filled with great conversations, laughter and of course our attempts at solving the worlds problems. We had a lot of fun discussing bug problems in the garden and the best wine to make next. Butch was an amazing friend. We will miss him dearly and are so happy to have had him in our lives. He was family. Thanks for being you.
    Love pat and cec

  25. Crystal (the little sister)

We only met because my sister Sam & Butch shared a room at Foothills hospital. Butch brought my sister a lot of comfort and she often spoke about the amazing conversations they had. He really made an impact on her life. Our family sends your family the deepest condolences and I’m sure Butch was there to greet my sister when she made her journey to Heaven on Dec. 18.
