WEST, Wilf Gerard

Born October 6th, 1938 in Lethbridge Alberta, died peacefully January 25th, 2019, in Calgary, aged 80.

Wilf grew up in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan as his father John was a section foreman with the Canadian Pacific Railway. They lived in many a section house on the side of the tracks near the grain elevators in any number of small towns dotted across the prairie. Wilf passed many happy days of youth duck and pheasant hunting in the sloughs and coulees of southern Alberta. He met Dorothy in Carmangay, Alberta and they married in 1963 in Manning, Alberta.

Wilf attended the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art in Calgary to become a surveyor and worked for the City of Calgary. He later earned a degree in education, graduating in 1971 from the University of Calgary. He dedicated his career of more than 25 years to teaching the students of the Calgary Catholic School District, most of that time at St. Francis High School, where he taught drafting and mathematics. His children, Pat, Ed, and Rob, attended St. Francis as students during his time teaching there. He also enjoyed baseball and was a little league coach and manager in Calgary for many years, coaching both Ed and Rob and many of their friends.

Wilf enjoyed the solitude and perfection of fly fishing – nothing better than a fresh trout frying up in butter after a successful catch. He was also a fine finishing carpenter and built many pieces of furniture as well as a substantial addition to the family home with a beautiful oak paneled living room. He always had a productive and delicious vegetable garden and perfectly groomed lawn always hand-mowed ‘with the grain’ and akin to a putting green! He was also a camper and enjoyed the outdoors and the family spent many summer holidays cruising the back roads of Alberta. He and Dorothy also travelled extensively after their retirement including an extended camping trip across Canada and another to the southwestern states of the US in Wilf’s custom-built collapsible truck-top folding tent-camper. They also made several trips to the United Kingdom, including a much-loved canal boat trip in Wales, and several trips to Europe including one to visit the former home of Wilf’s dad in Finland. They also set sail on a number of cruises, including one through the Panama Canal. Wilf also enjoyed old-style country music and dancing. He and Dorothy would float gracefully around the dance floor when a good waltz or two-step was played, and everyone would watch them.

Wilf is survived and missed by his loving wife of 55 years, Dorothy, his children Patricia Prosser and husband Paul (Calgary), Edmund West and wife Maria (Calgary), Robert West and wife Karen MacDonald (Gabriola Island, BC) and his grandchildren Aaron, Brendan, and Andrew Prosser; Matteo and Carina West; and Mia MacDonald-West. He is missed and dearly loved by his siblings: Donald West (Calgary), Ted West and sister-in-law Rose West (Killiney Beach, BC), Roy West (Calgary), Anne Lipoth and brother-in-law Ralph Lipoth (Calgary), Sharon (Catherine) West (Calgary), and brother-in-law Louie Cusano and spouse Jan Cusano (Cochrane). He is also loved and missed by many nephews, nieces, cousins, and in-laws from Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Sweden, and Finland as well as numerous friends. He was predeceased by his parents John and Marion West, his infant daughter Teresa Marie, his sisters Rita Ellen Cusano and Lorraine West, and his nephew Mario West.

Wilf had a beautiful and full life, enjoying the love of his family and friends, the births, lives and achievements of his children and grandchildren, a successful and meaningful career where he touched many lives, and most of all a long and loving marriage to Dorothy and a deep faith in God.

Our family would like to thank Dr. Maureen Young, the nurses and staff of Unit 32 and the Palliative Care team at Foothills Hospital for their care, compassion, and kindness to Wilf and family members.

    Dear Sharon (Catherine),
I was so sorry to read of Wilf’s death in yesterday’s Herald. He was your big brother when you and I were friends in high school so I didn’t really know him. All these years later, I can relate to your sorrow particularly because my youngest sister died almost ten years ago. I have a prior commitment tomorrow so I won’t be able to attend the funeral.
