WELLS, Helen Margaret (nee Wood)

November 14, 1928 – Bradford, Ontario
September 27, 2017 – Calgary, Alberta

Helen Wells, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully on September 27, 2017 at the age of 88 years.

Helen was born and raised on the Wood family farm in Bradford, ON. Helen met her future husband, Gordon, an Albertan, in Toronto where both, at the time, worked at Imperial Oil. They married in Calgary in 1952 and celebrated 65 years of marriage in July 2017. Helen retained a fondness for Ontario, with her many family relatives residing there but, at the same time became a proud Albertan. Helen made friends easily and took advantage of all that Alberta had to offer, in particular, the Rocky Mountains. Helen became an avid trail rider and hiker and enjoyed the family cabin at Lake Edith, Jasper. Helen was involved in several charitable organizations, including the Glenbow Museum, the Junior League, Samaritan Club and the Calgary Opera, including the Emerging Artist Program. Helen had not attended university as a youth but managed to correct that by attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree from University of Calgary in her late fifties. Helen loved films and the study of film. Helen especially loved to sit down with her son, Peter, and watch a film noir or a western.

Helen and Gordon travelled extensively, particularly after Gordon retired. Locations included, Mongolia, China, Europe, Mexico, South America, Africa and Canada’s North. Their most memorable trip was probably to Africa where they safaried and climbed mountains, notably Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya (in their sixties).

Helen is survived by her loving husband Gordon; son, Peter (Shoya); grandchildren, Olivia and Adam; Shirley, widow of James; step grandchildren, Paula (Wayne) and Laura (Ian); brother, Bob; nephews, Bob (Pat) and Brian; niece, Faye and sister-in-law, Millie.

Helen was predeceased by her parents, Roberta and Letitia (Williams) Wood, siblings; Joe, Doug and Ruth and her son James.

Memorial Services will be held at St. Peter’s Anglican Church (903 – 75th Avenue S.W.) on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. Reception to follow, location to be announced. Condolences may be forwarded through

If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Emerging Artist Program of the Calgary Opera –

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all of the staff at the Chateau Renoir Retirement Residence and the Age Care Glenmore for their kind care and support. Also we would like to extend our grateful thanks to The Rev. Dr. Jane Rowland who provided such comfort and spiritual guidance to Helen in her time of need.
