WATSON, Andrew (Andy)
January 29, 1927 – Calgary, AB
November 5, 2016 – Calgary, AB

Andrew (Andy) Watson passed away peacefully on November 5, 2016, at the age of 89.

He is survived by his daughter, Janene (Brock) Martin; grandson, Brent; son, James (Tammy) Watson; grandsons, Dylan and Cameron; his sister, Loretta Trevors and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Ann and Edward; sisters, Helen, Edna, Laura, Grace and Lois, and brothers Sandy and Edward.

Andrew was a native Calgarian who served as a police officer for the city police in the 1950s. He went into banking until he retired in 1985. He had a passion for motorcycles and cars and rode his motorcycle until he was 87. Andy also enjoyed weightlifting and playing the accordion in his band for many years, and he spent much time clipping articles from the paper, watching the Lawrence Welk show and old movies at home.

Anyone who met Andy had to tell him their birthdate and they were usually shocked when he remembered it, even many years later. He had a knack for mathematics and memorizing facts and dates, which he loved to share with others. When asked how he remembered so much, he’d answer, “How do you forget?” and add, “I’d give it all up for a good night’s sleep.” He loved to tell jokes and read the paper, especially at his local hangout, Ricky’s, where everyone knew him.

Neighbours in Varsity and Hidden Valley will remember Andy as their night watchman–always up late patrolling the area, and as one who shoveled walks and brought garbage cans in. He was ever-present in the evenings as well, watering or mowing his lawn and the park behind his house in the summer months.

He is now free to drive his Cadillac and motorcycles on highways paved in gold. Swell sleeps, Dad.

We would like to thank Dr. Leong and the staff of Unit 48 of the Rockyview Hospital where he was first diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, and the wonderful staff at the Bethany Harvest Hills for the last five months of exceptional care.

As per Andrew’s request there will be no funeral service. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly in Andrew’s name to Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS), Bay G 3851-21 street NE, Calgary, AB T2E 6T5. Tel: (403) 250-7377, http://aarcs.ca/donate/ or to The Alzheimer Society of Alberta and the Northwest Territories, Administrative Office, 10531 Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton AB T5H 4K1. Tel: (1-866) 950-5465, www.alzheimer.ab.ca .

In living memory of Andrew Watson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, Telephone: 403-276-2296.

Sincerest condolences.
He always remembered my birthday.

Condolence from Marilyn and Rod Johnson on November 16th, 2016 8:15 PM

Janene and Jamie Sorry to hear about Uncle Andrews passing. I know he was great at math, so I thought it was fitting that he died in order. He was number 8 child and he was the only one to pass away in his correct spot. I got a get kick out of him. When we would go to Mum and Da’s when I was a kid, he would keep me laughing steady. I kept all his Chrisatmas cards because I found them so entertaining with comments about people and dates. Apparently my birthday and Peter O’Tooles were both August 2nd. He was always interested in Rods grandmother because she lived to be 110. By-the-way he was 32,758 days old. Hope you are doing well.

Condolence from Carol and Derrick Ronayne on November 18th, 2016 9:27 AM

Janene, Jamie and families. So sorry to hear about Uncle Andrew. I remember him fondly and also remember the many stories my mother had of her cute curly headed baby brother. We enjoyed getting many Christmas cards from him with all the facts and numbers in them. He was especially interested in my birthday on November 19, 1999 as he was fascinated by the fact that it was the last date where all the numbers would be odd until January 1st, 3111. All the best to you and yours.
