WARREN, Helene

March 26, 1922 – Glen Leslie, Alberta
January 30, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Helene, our loving and zealous mother and grandmother on Wednesday, January 30, 2019. She left us peacefully, surrounded by family at the age of 96 in Calgary, Alberta.

Born in Glen Leslie, Alberta, she witnessed incredible changes to her world, living a full life as a mother, grandmother, homemaker, farmer, friend and mentor.

Helene was incessantly active. Her passion for walking acquired an audience of amazed witnesses well into her 90s. Starting as a child, she would walk implausible distances to get where she needed to be. Sadly, it was her lungs that betrayed her in her final years, as even at 96, she had places she wanted to go.

A farm girl at heart, she adored animals, and provided homes to both common and unlikely critters including dogs, cats, squirrels, chinchillas, canaries, budgies, rabbits, ducks, and more. Gardening was also a passion. She boasted a massive vegetable garden on the farm and maintained her love of green things indoors when she eventually moved into the city.

She loved to be in good company and was selfless with her time. She spent many years volunteering in elementary school classrooms, coaching new readers and delighting in the bounds of “mad minute” math quizzes. She had a passion for numbers and would always be the first to have the answer to an equation. Her taxes were done months in advance and would welcome the opportunity to help others with theirs.

A lady of social graces, she was polite, well kept, organized and friendly. Her infectious smile seldom left her face and her vivacious wit brought laughter to a room. She was a great light housed a tiny package. A charming, hardworking, loyal, compassionate, loving, lovable woman.

Helene will be immeasurably missed by her family, and the countless other people whose lives she touched along her near century-long journey.

She was the beloved mother of Darlene and Debbie (Larry), treasured grandmother of Jesse, Amy, Darbie, and Kaitlin. Proud great-grandmother to Mason, Payton, Declan and Zade. Predeceased by her husband Lawrence, brother Archie, sisters Emily and Gracie.

  3. Darlene,
Thinking of you and your family. I will never forget your mom and the many days she spent with us at Bowers. The students loved her and still mention her, many years later, when they think of grade 1. How lucky we were to have had her in our lives! I will never forget her sparking eyes, beautiful smile, and zest for life. She was wonderful. Hugs and love.
