WALLACE, Kenneth (Ken) Andrew

October 13, 1927 – Winnipeg, Manitoba
January 6, 2017 – Cochrane, Alberta

It is with deep sadness and peace that we announce the passing of Ken on January 6, 2017 at the age of 89 years at the Bethany Care Centre in Cochrane.

Ken attended high school in St. Boniface, Manitoba and attended the University of Manitoba where he achieved his B.Sc. degree and the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma where he obtained his degree as a Petroleum Geologist. Ken and Myrna moved back to Canada in 1951 where he began his career as a geologist for Mobil Oil. He eventually settled in Calgary with Mobil and later went on to become Exploration Manager for Canadian Homestead Oils. Ken was the founder and President of Summit Oils Ltd, a successful oil and gas exploration and development company where he remained until his retirement in 1979. Being an entrepreneur, he did not remain retired for long, and continued in various roles as President, Director and Consultant for various small oil and gas companies for many years.

Ken was a lifetime member of APEGGA, Past President of the Calgary Professional Club and Past President of the Calgary and Canadian National Arabian Horse Associations.

Ken and Myrna, with their young family, spent many happy times enjoying warmer climates in Arizona, Hawaii and travelling Europe.

One of Ken’s greatest passions was skiing which he enjoyed immensely with his family and friends. Ken was an accomplished Nordic and Alpine ski racer, winning many competitions. During WWII, Ken taught Canadian soldiers how to cross-country ski so they could be equipped to defend our Country.

As a devoted father, he fostered his love of outdoor recreation to his children. Be it skiing, hiking, horseback riding, snowmobiling or fishing, Ken will be remembered for this and his devotion to his family. He was the eternal optimist, generous, kind, loving with a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humour. He will be greatly missed.

Ken is survived by his devoted wife of 26 years, Doris of Cochrane, AB, daughter Tracey, sons Kim (Janet), Bradley (Petra), daughter-in-law Marie of Calgary, AB, grandchildren Lauren (Eric), Devon (Amanda), and Sarah (Alan), Spencer, Reece (Katrina), Liam, Nathan and Kendra, great-grandchildren Addison and Raelyn.

Ken was predeceased by his first wife Myrna, to whom he was married for 38 years, his son Scott who passed away from ALS in 1995, and siblings Frederick, Roderick and Lillian.

Memorial Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Cochrane, 369 Railway Street, Cochrane, AB), on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Family would like to thank the staff of the Bethany Care Centre in Cochrane for the compassionate care of our dad and husband. In Remembrance of Ken, donations may be made to the Bethany Family Council, 302 Quigley Drive, Cochrane, AB, T4C 1X9.

In living memory of Ken Wallace, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Cochrane, 369 RAILWAY STREET, COCHRANE. Telephone: 403-932-4740.
