VESTERDAL, Knut Olavson

May 30, 1924 – Sceptre, Saskatchewan
November 27, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Our dear father and grandfather, Knut Vesterdal, passed away at the age of 94 on Tuesday, November 27, 2018. His first words would be those of gratitude for the love of his wife and family, the care of his friends, the caring attention offered by the staff and volunteers at the Colonel Belcher, Eau Claire Care Residence, CNIB and the grace of his Lord Jesus Christ who forgives and loves him.

Knut enjoyed 50 years of marriage with Frances and has lived alone for the past 10 years with the constant companionship of his three children and their partners: Ellen and Chris, Kathy and Ray, Arthur and Isabelle and his three grandchildren Ashley, Brittany and Joel who will miss him deeply.

He will be remembered with fondness: how he cross-country skied, hiked and worked out until his late 80’s, nurtured his garden every season, volunteered at the Scandinavian Centre, attended faithfully at Centre Street Church, and never missed the chance to enjoy God’s Creation.

There were many miraculous moments in Knut’s life: the birth of his children and grandchildren, the love of his wife and family and his relationship with Jesus. Ironically, he was a guide for Ski for Light Canada for blind and visually impaired skiers, and later became blind himself. His trip to Israel, praying at the Western Wall in Jerusalem and his immersion in the water of the River Jordan was a dream come true.

He was a dedicated worker, serving during the war as an aero engine mechanic and later as an electrician on the DEW line. After moving to Calgary, he became a journeyman electrician (IBEW), a teacher and finished his career as an electrician for the Calgary School Board. He and Frances enjoyed camping and travelling the world, including Alaska, Germany, Norway and the east coast of Canada.

Funeral Service will be held at Hillhurst United Church (1227 Kensington Close N.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, November 30, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, 15 Colonel Baker Place N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 4Z3 Telephone: (403) 261-7219.

In living memory of Knut Vesterdal, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. CALGARY, AB, T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.

  13. Dear Knut,

It’s hard to believe that we’ve known each other for over 30 years. It’s harder still to conceive that you are no longer with us. I was, and still am blessed to be part of the Vesterdal family. I possess the fondest memories of camping in Mr. and Mrs. Vs trailer, or tenting next to it when our family grew. Family meals and get-togethers, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, weddings, births and funerals. I remember fishing with you once or twice, watching hockey games with you in your living room, exercising or going or coming from exercising, remembering how strong you were, and later your physical struggles as the weight of age and time took its toll – which you handled with grace. I also remember that I could make you laugh, even during those last couple of years. You were a good provider to your family, and a great example to me. Thank you all those things and more.

  14. What a truly wonderful man! He enjoyed life. His constant faith has been an inspiration for many. We enjoyed his excitement and joy at seeing the sites in Israel, making them each a religious experience for the whole group. He has passed through the veil, but has left us all vision of a ‘gentle soul’.
