VEJPRAVA, Anthony “Roy”

May 15, 1927 – Blairmore, Alberta
September 19, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Roy Vejprava at the age of 89.

Roy was born on May 15, 1927 in Blairmore, Alberta. Roy married Alice in 1950, and moved to Calgary in 1957 where he began his career in the oil-patch. He was an avid sportsman with a love of baseball, curling, hockey, and golf. Roy excelled in his passion as an umpire, selected by his peers to be home plate umpire in the final game of the Canadian Little League Championships. He joined the Calgary Winter Club in the inaugural year, was a founding member of Country Hills Golf Club, and represented Alberta in the Canadian Seniors Curling Championships. Above all, Roy will be remembered for his unwavering love and devotion to his family. His greatest joys were always when we were all together, and he leaves great memories hosting the family for holidays and many weekend happy hours.

He was deeply loved by his sons and daughters-in-law, Gord and Shelby, and Haig and Janice; brother, Gordon; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret Ann and Dorlan Gates; grandchildren, Jennifer and Aaron Sadleir, Josh and Sarah, Kaylyn and Matt Mackarenko, Tyler, Brody; great-grandchildren, Brady, Alana, Crawford; and Roy’s best friend, Ollie Samoil.

We would like to thank Dr. Steven Bowen for his outstanding care and compassion for the patriarch of our family.

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North) on Monday, September 26, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

  6. It was with great sadness that we learned the flags at Country Hills were due to the passing of Mr Vejprava. I have always said he was the nicest man in the world. Always a delight to talk to. An inspiration to everyone at the club. The boys in my group removed their hats and had a moment for Mr Vejprava and would like to offer our most sincere condolences to the family. We have lost a true gentleman.

From the whole Paisley family, we are so sorry for your loss. Roy was such a special guy, who always took the time to chat and LOVED talking about his family. Roy was so proud of all of his grandkids and he has left a legacy in all of them on the importance of family. He always was wearing a smile, wherever we saw him and loved watching the kids play sports. He would light up any room! We feel very honoured to have been a small part of his journey in life. May the many cherished memories you share, always bring a smile to your faces when you think of him. Hugs to all!!
