VAN TUYL, Chris Johann

May 6, 1934 – Eindhoven, Holland
December 14, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with overwhelming sadness that we announce the passing of Chris Van Tuyl or “Papa” as most people knew him on Friday, December 14, 2018 at the age of 84 years.

Chris’ story began in Eindhoven in 1934 where he was the youngest of five Van Tuyl siblings. He moved to Canada at the age of 19 in search of an exciting new life – starting out in Luseland, Saskatchewan. By 1961 he had met the girl of his dreams in Kaz and they married shortly after on December 21st.

Chris’ enterprising approach to life led him to numerous locales from the Northwest Territories where he was a bush pilot, Creston BC where he and Kaz owned Van’s Apple Orchard, finally settling in Calgary where he started RV Auto. Throughout their lives, his passions for flying, cars, horses and travel had the couple on adventures and crossing paths with many people who have remained lifelong friends. Most recently you would find Chris riding his bike around the neighborhood or cheering on one of his grandchildren at a play, recital or soccer field.

There is so much to Chris that it would be impossible to mention in these few words all that he stood for and believed in. His dedication to his volunteer work at the Foothills Hospital, his family and especially his granddaughters was apparent to all who knew him.

Our treasured husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend will be missed by his wife of 57 adventure filled years, Kaz; his sons, Steve (Lianne) and Mark (Sheri). His many stories will always live on through his granddaughters; Emily, Sarah, Zoe, Jaida and Maya – all of whom will forever miss their Papa with all their hearts.

A Celebration of Chris’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and many others from the ICU (Unit C) at the Foothills Hospital whose warmth and humanity helped us through this difficult time.

In living memory of Chris Van Tuyl, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Crowfoot, 82 CROWFOOT CIRCLE N.W. CALGARY, AB, T3G 2T3, Telephone: 403-241-0044.

  7. Dear Van Tuyl family… along with many of our home group members, I was sorry to hear about Chris’s passing. I didn’t know him well, but he was a regular attendee at our Saturday late afternoon meetings and we were always glad to see him there. I know it was a bit of a production/challenge for him just to make it to the meeting room, but I think as long as he had a ride he was glad to come and he always had a good message for the group. One recurring message he talked about was having “faith” and if you have that you get through everything. Condolences to all… he will be missed… but his spirit, determination and faith will long be remembered.

  11. Dear Van Tuyl family,
I am so sad to hear about Chris. While I only knew him for less than 2 years he had a positive impact on my life. His faith and love for his family was obvious in all my interactions with him. Chris was aware that every day was a precious gift and he always spoke about his love and gratitude for his wife, children and grandchildren. I learned about living one day at a time, staying connected to God and being grateful, even during trying times, from Chris who lead by example. Our Saturday meetings will not be the same without him, but I have no doubt that his presence will be felt for a very long time to come.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences for the significant loss of your husband, father, grandfather and friend. I wish you peace during this difficult time.
