VAN TIENHOVEN, Petronella (Nell) Johanna

September 1, 1929 – Goes, Holland
January 1, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Petronella (Nell) Johanna Van Tienhoven passed away after a hard fought battle against numerous health issues.

Nell was a giver in the truest sense. She worked at Bow View Manor for twenty three years, in that time the family got to know many of the residents as mom would bring them home for an afternoon, for a meal, for an outing….they were always welcome. Her volunteer work lasted longer than her eyesight did. When it became apparent that she was the one who needed help, it was a bitter pill to swallow. As time passed, dementia also started taking her away from us. We miss her terribly but know she is now at peace.

She is survived by her children, Marty (Leo) and Joe (Trish); daughter-in-law Shirley; ten grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Johannes (Jo) in 1994 and son Ted in 2009.

A Celebration of Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North, Calgary, AB), on Saturday, June 8, 2019 from 2:30 P.M – 4:30 P.M. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Nellie Van Tienhoven, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH, CALGARY, AB, T2E 2V6, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  8. Nellie was the first person to introduce herself to me when I began swimming at the V.R.R.I. During those many hours at the pool, I always enjoyed Nellie’s humor, friendship and openness. Throughout her health challenges and personal heartaches, Nellie was always positive, always a glass half-full kind of lady. When Nellie could no longer come to the pool, she had many friends who missed her company. The esteem in which she was held and the loyalty which she inspired was evidenced in the friends who visited and helped care for her during the last five years. Nellie was one-of-a-kind; a compassionate, generous, and courageous lady who exemplified what friendship meant and I miss her.
