USSELMAN, Stanley “Stan” Gordon

May 8, 1954 – Calgary, Alberta
April 17, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Stan “Coach” Usselman, beloved husband of Marina (nee Pugh) of Calgary, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at the age of 64 years.

From the baseball diamonds and football fields in Bowness as a kid, to the curling rinks and golf courses as an adult Stan was a lover of all things sports. If he wasn’t playing a sport than he was probably coaching. He started out as a baseball coach and basketball referee in his late teens and early twenties, but it was at the curling rink where he earned the infamous title of “Coach”. He coached several ladies and junior teams to both provincial and Canadian championships including the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. Throughout his life he received several awards/accolades as a curling coach, but for Stan it was his junior curlers that held a special place in his heart. As a long-time volunteer for the Alberta Curling Federation, the Alberta Rocks summer curling camp was a personal favorite.

There were two seasons in Stan’s life, curling season and golf season. From April – October you’d most likely find Stan on the Muirfield Lakes Golf Course, or Fox Hollow where he got his hole in one, with all his best buddies. And if he wasn’t on the golf course or in a curling rink you’d probably find Stan in a pub watching the Liverpool game.

He was a twenty year employee at CIBC, but for the last five years he had his dream job of Club Manager at the North Hill Curling Club. Stan’s legacy of volunteering also includes being a board member at the North Hill Curling Club, President of the Alberta Curling Federation (ACF), President of the Southern Alberta Curling Federation (SACA), and President of the Muirfield Lakes Golf Society. Stan is also an Honorary Life Member of SACA.

If you asked Stan he’d tell you he wasn’t much of a traveller but he’d be lying. He loved his annual golf trips with friends to Nevada and California. He celebrated his 50th birthday at Fenway Park in Boston, visited Trefor mountain granite quarry in Wales, flew in a float plane in Whitehorse, went on an Alaskan cruise, vacationed in Mexico and Hawaii with family, saw Paris and London with his wife, and spent every summer in the Okanagan with his family when his kids were younger.

Besides his loving wife Marina, Stan is survived by his son Thomas Usselman of Rocky Mountain House, AB, daughters Stacey Usselman (Phil Fraboni) of Hamilton, ON, Sarah Karpuk (Chris Karpuk) of Calgary, AB; five grandchildren Makenna, Taylor, & Kaiden Usselman of Rocky Mountain House, Olivia & Riley Karpuk of Calgary; brothers Robert, Harold, Donald, and David; sisters Marion Aune (Robert Aune), Dorothy Webb (Greg Webb), and Bonnie Lepla (Bill Lepla). Stan was predeceased by mother Betty, father Alan, twin brother Stephen, and sister Betty Ann.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the North Hill Curling Club (1201 2nd Street NW, Calgary, AB), on Friday May 3, 2019 at 1:00pm. Stan’s family would like you to wear your favourite curling shirt, jacket or sports jersey. The family would like to thank the Foothills Medical Centre nurses, doctors, and staff, the North Hill Curling Club, and Muirfield Lakes golf course.

  11. So sorry to hear of Stan’s passing. I never knew his family, but I did know him when he was my account manager with CIBC back in the early ’90’s. Stan took a chance on a new business startup – an animation supply company in an oil and gas town. His support, and belief in us, helped build that company from startup to the world’s largest supplier to the animation industry. His family might want to know what an incredibly unique man he was — and how many people he helped (that were associated with all kinds of ‘firsts’ in this city). May your own special memories of this kind and special man heal the pain of loss.

He helped us with purchase of our home to move to Calgary, and even helped me get a job at CIBC. I can’t express in words, in how he has made a difference in our lives. He was a special man, and we hold our deepest gratitude for him.

Heartfelt condolences to Stan’s family, from both Susan and I. His dry sense of humour, and quick wit will be greatly missed at Muirfield. I had the pleasure of golfing with Stan only a few times in the last few years, but it was always enjoyable, no matter where the ball went – although in Stan’s case it was usually in the middle. Goodbye to a true gentleman, – fairways and greens, Stan.

  39. Marina and family. We were saddened to hear of Stan’s passing. We feel fortunate that life’s journey allowed our paths to cross. Our wonderful sport of Curling created that connection for us. Parker fondly remembers the year Stan was his Coach – they won 2011 Jr Provincials and got to experience Jr Nationals that were hosted in Calgary that year. Stan gave so much of his time to a sport he loved and helped so many enjoy all that this great sport has to offer. We are hoping your many memories will bring smiles to you and help make this time less difficult. Hugs Bev Parker Becca Konschuh.

  40. Marina, Thomas, and the rest of the Usselman family,
I’m so incredibly sorry to hear about Stan’s passing. I always enjoyed his mischievous/teasing streak and I got a lot of chuckles out of watching him try to look annoyed that my dogs stole his spot on the love seat, only to then catch him cuddled right up with both of them just minutes later when he didn’t think anyone would see 😉
Wishing you strength and peace in the coming days and weeks as you reflect on his legacy and hope as you see it live on through all of you (including all of Stan’s grandkids)— especially as you continue to get out on the links or on the ice.
