June 23, 1930 – Drumheller, Alberta
October 11, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Howard Cogan Usher, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend passed from among us October 11, 2018 in Calgary, AB at the age of 88 years.

Howard was born to Charles and Helen Usher on June 23, 1930 in Drumheller, AB. He grew up ranching with his parents and brother Charles and sister Trudy first on the Thumb Hill Ranch and then on the banks of the Red Deer River west of Big Valley. In the late 1950’s Howard returned to school first in Calgary and then at the University of Alberta in Edmonton; graduating from St. Stephen’s College in 1962 to become a United Church Minister. While in Edmonton he met Patricia Hoskin, love flourished, and they were married Sept 16, 1961. They were blessed with three children, Anne (Alun), Doug (Maureen) and Ken (Carol), as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In his time as a United Church minister he served congregations in Alberta and British Columbia. We will treasure his story telling, his quiet humor, his skill at making things with his own hands, his love of the outdoors and trains, and many friendships through the years.

A celebration of his life will be held at St. Thomas United Church (100 Hawkwood Boulevard N.W., Calgary, AB [1]) on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 3:00 p.m.

Condolence from Ardith Tjornelund & family on October 20th, 2018 12:46 AM

Howard and the whole Usher family were so much a part of our life when they lived in Cardston. They moved here in 1975 just before my husband David died and was here when I married Otto. Howard was so much a part of this community. Was a carpenter and we still have the cross he made for our Old St. Andrews in the new St. Andrews church. We will miss him and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Dear Patricia,
A recent United Church’s death notices lists Howard’s passing; I recall you, as Patricia Hoskin, being excited about a party (Christmas?) you would attend with Howard Usher. And you were sewing a lovely blue dress for the occasion!

My husband, Ron, passed away this past July.

Condolences to you and your family.

Irene (Minich) Everest
