UPTIGROVE, John Walter

April 19, 1964 – Mahabaleshwar, India
July 15, 2018 – High River, Alberta

John beloved husband of Tracy Uptigrove of Rockyview, AB, passed away on July 15, 2018 at the age of 54 years.

John was born in Mahabaleshwar, India in 1964. He was the second son to missionary parents Ormond & Freda, and brother to Jim. The family returned to Canada in 1976. John grew up in Three Hills, Alberta and graduated from Prairie High School. He obtained a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Calgary in 1987. John’s career started with Nova, stationed in Fairview, Alberta where he met his future wife, Tracy. They were married in 1992 and had two beautiful children, Brandon and Meghanne. John pursued his passion for helicopters by establishing his business, Innovator Technologies, designing and manufacturing ultralight helicopters. He was constantly part of new and upcoming innovative programs to launch technology to the furthest. He was active in his church at First Alliance, serving people in need as part of the tool team ministry. He enjoyed water sports and tennis, as well as watching his daughter play sports like ringette and ultimate, and he loved to engage in a heated video game battle with his son, as long as he won (but he frequently lost).

John had a very large laugh that was contagious. His children were the light of his life and will miss his bad jokes and warm hugs. His wife will miss the life they built together. He will be greatly missed by many.

John is survived by his wife Tracy and his two wonderful children, Brandon and Meghanne and his mother Freda. He is also survived by his brother Jim and wife Michele, and nieces Elise and Hannah, as well as numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins and their families. He was predeceased by his father Dr. Ormond Uptigrove.

Memorial Service will be held at First Alliance Church – Harvest Room (12345 – 40th Street S.E., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Atrium. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Compassion Canada, https://www.compassion.ca/make-a-donation/ or Tool Team at FAC in memory of John.

In living memory of John Uptigrove, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th STREET S.E.. Telephone: 403-203-0525.

Dear Tracy and family, Drew and I were so very sad to hear the news. We have such happy memories of our times with you and John (and the Woodlands gang). We know John will be so missed. He was blessed to have you and the kids in his life, as well as gaining many years of pleasure from his passion for helicopters. John always struck me as such a good steadfast solid individual with a lovely smile and sense of humor to boot. It is a gift that you all had each other but this parting is far, far too soon. My heart aches for you, Megan and Brandon. Sending you strength and support.

John, you made me laugh as you raced down the gravel, dogs in tow. Your laugh when we chatted about how strange life can be gave me perspectives I could and would not have had unless we spoke. You taught me even dedication doesn’t always provide success as underground fence digging kept you and I busy and frustrated and good for a giggle! You are already missed by your neighbors and as we still try to learn how to cope each day without my Dad we now have to figure out how to function without you! May your new wings keep you close to your family and the memories shared keep comfort close to our hearts. So very sorry for your loss Tracy, Meg, Brandon family and friends.

I am very sorry to here of John’s passing. I didn’t know him personally but only communicated with him by e-mail. He was always very helpful in answering my questions but what really stood out to me was his boldness on the Mosquito forum to speak of the real meaning of Christmas. I am so thankful to know that he had the gift of life that he spoke of and is now with our loving heavenly Father in his eternal home and all that have this gift will see John again. Questions arise and even anger but I know because of what Jesus said it is the thief (the god of this world, the devil) his purpose is to steal, kill and destroy but I (Jesus) have come to give life and because of that we can trust in God and receive comfort and strength to carry you through this time.Tracy, I pray for God’s sustaining grace and comfort of his Holy Spirit be with you and your children and all who have been so impacted by his passing.
    sincerely Win

Though it has been years since we spent time together I was saddened to see in the news John’s passing. Your family was so vibrant and alive when we spent time with you and I so remember John showing us his first helicopter creation and discussing with us how it worked, etc. Though John had gone on ahead of you to be with our maker, may you know God’s comfort and peace as your life’s journey changes. Our prayers go with you and your family. To think you live in High River now and we moved from there only 2 years ago. WOW! —Sean & Wendy Slavik

John was a part of our class at PHS 1982 in Three Hills. He was a positive fun person to be around and I’m sure his loss will be felt by many. Over The years since then I have seen notices that he created and built a number of machines for personal flight. In my imagination I see him flying free in heaven with his Lord and Saviour.

So sorry and saddened to hear of the tragic loss of your beautiful husband/Dad.
I will remember him when we first met – proudly showing us his helicopter in your garage.
And the times we spent lugging our lawn chairs (and the times he carried mine for me) across a field, or sitting on the hard bleachers watching the kids play ball. It was always fun to sit with you guys, or have a good chin wag in the driveway if we carpooled, and when the girls hung out together.

I was saddened to hear of John’s passing. He was a great friend of mine in high school. His wonderful laugh, never ending energy and kind heart are how I remember him. That and his little orange bug that he fixed up and drove all over Three Hills in!! We touched base every now and then and his obvious love for his family and his passion for his work was so evident. I’m very sorry to hear of John’s passing. Tracy and family, please accept my sincere condolences and sympathy at this difficult time. My connection with John was by way of the Mosquito Helicopter owner’s group. I met up with him during annual Fly-Ins held at the Trenton, FL factory. I will always remember his friendly nature, love for helicopters and robust laugh. As a result of John’s efforts to design, develop and bring the Mosquito ultralight helicopter to market. People like me all over the world, are able to realize the dream of owning and flying their very own helicopter. I sincerely thank John for that!
