ULEVOG, Sandra (Sandy) Marilyn (nee Lyon)

September 7, 1945 – Carmangay, Alberta
July 11, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that the family of Sandy Ulevog announce her passing on Thursday, July 11, 2019, at the age of 73 years.

Sandy was born in Carmangay, AB on September 7, 1945, and grew up in Barons, Alberta on the Lyon family farm. She loved sports, and was active in basketball and softball growing up. After graduating from Barons Consolidated School in 1963, Sandy moved to Calgary, AB, where she became a nurses’ aide. In the years following, Sandy pursued various interests, becoming an accomplished seamstress and racquetball player while staying at home to focus on her family. She eventually rejoined the workforce, enjoying a successful career in the oil and gas industry as a geophysical technician and in seismic approvals.

Sandy achieved much throughout her life. She enjoyed golfing, and was particularly proud of being the Director of the Women in Seismic Golf Tournament for many years. A significant highlight for Sandy was being one of the Olympic Torch Relay runners for the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Sandy liked any music that would “make her toes tap”, enjoyed watching just about any sport, and was an avid reader. She also loved traveling, finding adventure in many countries around the globe. Sandy was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved her family dearly. Upon retirement, she spent every moment she could experiencing life with her grandsons, enjoying every minute of it.

Sandy will be most remembered for her strong will in her fight against cancer, and her gentle nature.

Sandy is survived by her daughter, Randi Ulevog-Jones (Bert Jones) of Calgary, AB, and grandsons Jackson and Logan Jones. Sandy is also survived by her sister Judy Zimmel (nee Lyon) of Wetaskiwin, AB; brother Gene Lyon of Picture Butte, AB; brother Harold Lyon (Donna) of Kelowna, BC; brother Gordon Lyon (Yvonne) of Carmangay, AB; sister Susan Lyon (Lyn) of Chezzetcook, NS; and brother Wade Lyon (Lynn) of Ottawa, ON. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Sandy is predeceased by her parents, Lloyd and Lillian Lyon, and her dear friend and former husband, Thomas Ulevog.

A Celebration of Sandy’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Friday, July 19, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Randi, Bert, Jackson and Logan,

Please accept my condolences on your loss. I was so sorry to hear of the recent passing of Sandra. I had known her since I started at Standard Life back in August of 1974, when I worked with her former husband, Thom. I have great memories of all the times shared with her. I know what a special lady she was and I will miss her. I hope the memories of the past give you some comfort during this difficult time. May you take comfort in the fact that you are surrounded by people that love and care for you. If there is anything I can do, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

I have many happy memories of time spent with Sandy, especially outings with Jackson and Logan to the zoo, Heritage Park and Calaway Park. We also had fun travelling together in France, Belize, Disneyland, Palm Springs and Vegas . We also shared many family meals together, she always shared in the preparation and cleanup. She will be missed but never forgotten.

To Randi, Bert, Jackson & Logan,
Your mom/grandma was a very special person to me and my family. From meeting Sandy the first time when Arcis began, until now, Sandy held a very soft spot in my/our hearts. From our Golfing together, numerous coffee dates, dinners, attending many of our family celebrations, watching our curling games (our #1 fan), and countless other activities she truly enjoyed.
Know that she loved you all with all her heart and she will remain there forever. She will be missed, a LOT!
We are only a phone call away if you need anything at all, anytime. Hugs to you all!!

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your Mother. She was an absolute awesome person and we so enjoyed working with her when she was in the oil patch. She was so proud of you and was always updating us on all your accomplishments. This is such a difficult time for your family, having just recently lost your Dad. They are both watching over you now, and still sharing their friendship. May all your memories of them fulfill your heart with their love.

  8. “Dear Sandra”,
You certainly left this world a better place – thank you. I remember you as a high school track star in Barons CHS – and you playing very good basketball there as well- and being one of the “smart girls” in high school. (I was about 5 years behind you – one of the little kids with your brother Gord.) Your presence, efficiency and awfully friendly personality at Arcis Corp. some 30 years later was a wonderful surprise. You have left a wonderful mark upon our earth, and upon many people; may God bless you & keep you. I am so sorry I cannot attend your celebration of such a wonderful life.

  13. Randi

I am so sorry to hear of your moms passing. I have such fond memories of her when we were kids in Dover & on my weekends spent at your place thereafter. She was an amazing woman and always so proud of you. Mom send her condolences – she was picking me up at the airport instead of attending the celebration of life.

    Dear Randi, Jackson, Logan, Bert and Family, and Alison;

We were shocked and saddened to learn of Sandy’s passing so soon after Thom’s. What a terrible, heart wrenching year it has been for you all!

Please take comfort in knowing that Sandy and Thom will never truly be gone from you. They will live on in your hearts and memories, through the devoted love they gave you, their many kindnesses and the enduring legacy that is the person you have become!

Unfortunately, due to prior commitments to our own family, we were unable to be, with you, at the Celebration of Sandy’s Life on July 19; but you all were in our thoughts and prayers, before, then and since.

May God Bless and Comfort you!

    Rich and Heather Mayers
