UHRMAN, Julie (nee Yanoszewsky)

October 25, 1919 – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
December 7, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Julie Uhrman of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, December 7, 2018 at the age of 99 years.

Julie was born in Saskatoon, SK, to Samuel Yanoszewsky and Sophia Gillowich on October 25, 1919 and was followed by her sister Ann within a year. On Julie’s second birthday, their mother died. Samuel later remarried Helen Andreachuk adding Michael, William, Jonathan and Mary to the family. At some point, the boys made the decision to shorten the family name to Yano. On May 24, 1937, Julie married Louis Uhrman and while still in Saskatoon, Bette and Dona were born. The family moved to Calgary in 1942 where Ron was born in 1943. For many years they owned and operated the Brown Derby Meat Market in the Kensington area in the building now occupied by Hot Wax Records. Later they were both involved in Real Estate Sales and eventually became owners of the Empire Hotel in East Coulee AB. Always the entrepreneur, Julie turned part of their living quarters into a cafe that soon became the most popular eating spot in town. After selling the Hotel, they managed the Stetson Motel in Calgary and later the Spruce Grove Motel in Banff. They retired to Rocky Mountain House but after a few years moved back to Calgary to be closer to Ron who needed care. While in the Whitehorn district Julie was active in the St. Thomas Moore C.W.L and also involved in dog grooming and many hobbies and crafts. Ron was living in the Fanning Centre and eventually Louis was as well. Louis died there in 1995, at age 86. Following this, Julie moved to Confederation Park Villas, then to Huntington Hills Retirement Village, then to Aspen Lodge. In 2010, Ron died on Julie’s 91st Birthday. He was 67. Julie suffered a minor stroke in 2011 and was moved to Hillcrest where she resided until December 7, 2018. While there, although confined to a wheelchair, she participated in every possible activity and in 2017 was voted in as the President of the Happy Seniors Association and loved being referred to as Madam President.

Julie is survived by her daughter, Dona Johnson (Edward) and Dona’s grandchildren, Samantha and Joe Decker: the Ringness Family: Carl Ringness (Marilyn); Mark Ringness (Kerry) and their daughters Jessica, Megan and Hanna; Kristina Brew (Dr. Ringness DVM) her husband Donald and their son Bryan Brew. Numerous nieces and nephews.

Julie was predeceased by her husband, Louis Uhrman in 1995, her granddaughter Leigh Decker in 2009; her son Ronald Uhrman in 2010, and her daughter Elizabeth “Bette” Ringness in 2013. In addition, she was predeceased by all of her stepbrothers: Michael, William and John Yano; her stepsister Mary Miller and just last year by her sister Ann Shynkaruk.

Very important in her life were her friends Mary Jakubowski (George), Russell and Edna Todd, Helen Vik, and numerous volunteers and residents of Hillcrest.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the Extendicare Hillcrest staff and volunteers, particularly Randy Thomas and Karen Walker both of whom make such a difference in the lives of all the residents.

Funeral Services will be held at Hillcrest Extendicare, 1512-8th Ave N.W., Calgary, AB, on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with a short reception to follow. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

  2. My condolences to Julies family. She was a wonderful woman. I met Julie when I worked at the Fanning Centre in the 1990’s. I knew her as a dedicated mother to Ron – she visited every day and was a warm and friendly presence with all she met. In reading her obituary I see that she lived a good and long life, rich in experience and giving.

  3. I would like to extent my deepest sympathies of the passing of dear Julie.
Also, I would like to do the same on behalf of my dear mother, Penny, who temporarily shared a room with Julie for a short time at Hillcrest…Penny unfortunately died on February 1st, 2018, and the very young age of 69.
My mom befriended Julie in the few months they were roommates at Hillcrest and I was always delighted to hear some of Julie’s stories of days gone by. She was so very intriguing and had a quick wit about her. My mom felt the same way about her.
    Rest in peace ladies.
I hope you both have reunited in heaven and continue to share some lighthearted stories, being silly and keep laughing!
    Much love, Eden Parks.
