TZOTZOS, Lilian Patricia (nee Benallack) “Patty”

September 30, 1942 – January 17, 2019

Our dear Patty passed away in Calgary on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at the age of 76 years. She was born September 30, 1942 in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan.

Patty was a woman of faith, fortitude and—yes—lists. She taught school. Her students found her inspiring. She nourished their imaginations, collected their poems and published a book: The Apple Is Peeled. Patty herself had been working on her own writing project for many years. She left hundreds of thousands of words for her children to whittle down into a manageable manuscript (stay tuned). Music was a passion. (At the hospice she played Vivaldi a little too loudly). She would go into a museum and spend an hour looking at one painting.

Patty put her faith into action—she was a member of the CWL, packed and delivered food hampers for the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and volunteered with Inn From The Cold. We’ll miss our loving little mother. We’ll miss her impromptu dances (while, say, doing dishes). We’ll miss her inquisitiveness, her courage, her little Patty ways.

Patty is survived by her children, Demetri (Carmen), Christopher (Carolyn), and Liza (Mike), her granddaughters, Anna and Lili, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Gus, her parents, John and Lilian, brothers, George and John, sister Avelle and infant sister Dana.

Thank-you to everyone at Chinook Hospice. Let’s remember what Thomas Merton said, “Love has overcome. Love is victorious. Amen.”

Prayers will be held at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church (321 – 90 Ave SE) on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, Friday, January 25, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Memories and condolences may be shared with Patty’s family through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, www.cancer.ca.

In living memory of Patty Tzotzos, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  9. I don’t make it a habit to read the obituaries every day (or even once a year) but for some reason today I did…and I came upon this one. I knew Mrs. Tzotzo from her days teaching at Father Whelihan and I have never forgotten her. She was my teacher, my coach for Speech Club, and she even published one of my poems in her book “The Apple is Peeled”. I remember how thrilled she was when that book was published and I felt very privileged to be one of the few students to tour around with her doing poetry readings at coffee shops and book stores to promote it. We had so much fun and I have always treasured those memories. I am so sad to hear of Mrs. Tzotzo’s passing and I am deeply sorry for your family’s loss. She was truly an amazing woman who made such an impact on so many lives. God bless.

  13. Dear Demetri, Chris and Liza, Your parents became my kind neighbours five years ago and now I’m missing both of them. I am truly sorry for your family’s loss. I enjoyed time spent with your mom and smiled when I read about her passion for music and for life. I’d like to add something else: her passion for sharing her passions with others. I have an especially fond memory of going with her to the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra’s Christmas performance in the lovely Grace Presbyterian Church. It was a treasured tradition for your mom but a first for me and I’m grateful that she introduced me to something so beautiful. That was your mom–she nurtured the beautiful in this world. God bless.

  14. To the Tzotzos family.
I would like to express my deepest and heartfelt condolences to your entire family at the passing of Patty and leave you with a Quote that I once heard.
It was expressed by an Olympic gold medallist whom was also facing his own mortality. He said this during an interview.
    “Honor Tombstone
It is the date of our birth and
    The date of our death
    But what matter most
Is the dash that lies between”
Patty was a devoted Christian, dedicated to helping those less fortunate, through teaching, she shaped the minds and souls of a younger generation. She wrote numerous books and poems and, was a devoted wife to Gus and mother to Demetri, Chris and Liza. It was my honor to know such a dedicated woman. I think we can all agree.
Patty’s “dash” to the finish was certainly worthy of a gold medal.
