TYLER, Lillian Rebecca

June 10, 1927 – Red Deer  Alberta

July 5, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Lil (Lillian) Tyler (Gehrke) died peacefully July 5, 2018.  She started life on a farm in 1927 in Shady Nook, west of Red Deer.

Throughout her life – career, volunteer work and personal life – Lil always focused on strengthening the family and the quality of life for children including her work with the Children’s Aid Society in Toronto, the Calgary YWCA, the Family Life Education Council, and the boards of the national Vanier Institute of the Family and the Calgary Immigrant Aid Society.

In 1969, Lil and her husband Tim bought “The Farm” northwest of Calgary and made it a second home for their family until Tim’s passing in October 2017.

She is lovingly remembered by her sister Pat (Reg MacDougall), and brother Bill (Myrna); children Stephen (Barbara Hansen), Lynne, Randy and Maureen; and grandchildren Kari, Bryan and Sean (Michelle); and great-grandson Nolan.  Delphine Blackhorse (MacPhail), a member of the family and also in our hearts, passed unexpectedly the day after Lil.

A memorial reception will be held for Lil at Garrison Green Seniors’ Community, 3028 Don Ethell Boulevard, on July 20, 2018 at 1:00 p.m.  If friends so desire, donations may be made to the YWCA of Calgary.

Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Lil Tyler, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  5. Rod Tomlinson :

The Calgary Community owes so much for the work Lil did to bring Family Life Education to us. So many concerned people were trained to lead parenting groups, marriage support groups, women’s support groups and family life groups. And, so many people and their children and partners who attended the groups were to benefit from the trainers’ expertise. Under her leadership the Family Life Education Council flourished.

    Dear Tyler family,

It was a privledge and a pleasure serving all of you. I loved Lil dearly. As all of you.

For anyone that missed my speech for Lil during her memorial at UAL. I typed it out. I love you all so much and thank you for the beautiful expert on Cuba and friend.

“How long have I worked here? *glances at watch * Ok 3 years. Lillian greeted me in such a profound way. She said ” Jeremy, if I can’t remember your name I’ll just call you George. Is that ok? ” and to which I replied without hesitation ” Ok Joyce”. Lil will be in our hearts and minds forever. On behalf of food services, you’ll be dearly missed. *hands off microphone *”
