TYCHKOWSKY, Susan Kathleen

May 9, 1965 – Edmonton, Alberta
March 5, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce that Susan Tychkowsky, beloved mother of Ryan, and beloved wife of Randy, passed away on March 5, 2019, at the age of 53 years, after a courageous two year battle with cancer.

Susan was born and raised in Edmonton, and graduated from the University of Alberta with a B.Sc. in Nursing. She began her nursing career in Edmonton. The first week after she and Randy got married, he bought her a stuffed bunny nicknamed Hugglebunny, to help her deal with being a newlywed, living in a new city and starting a new job. That first week of marriage marked the start of her special attachment to bunnies. Hugglebunny travelled everywhere with them, even to the Middle East where they were stationed for two years. Not long after their return to Alberta, Susan and Randy were blessed with the arrival of their dear son, Ryan. As Ryan grew, so did Susan’s bunny collection, last numbered at well over 100 bunnies. Hugglebunny is 31 years old now, and came with Susan to the hospice last December.

Susan was a devoted mother, and always so proud of her son and all of his accomplishments, from being an honors student in high school to becoming a gifted automotive mechanic in 2019. Susan delighted in taking Ryan on a special trip to Paris in 2016 to celebrate his high school graduation.

Her kindness and generosity was not just limited to her family and her bunnies, but also extended to her friends and most certainly to her patients. She spent many years nursing in cardiology at Foothills Hospital and at the Holy Cross Hospital, and transferred to Endocrinology seven years ago. Susan’s patients were of utmost importance to her. She worked the entire week before her final hospitalization, being sure every patient got the best care, every question got answered, and everyone who was worried got some extra comfort. This was despite the pain she was enduring from tumors spreading throughout her body. To know what extra help her patients needed and to give it to them – whether a pat on the hand, or a sympathetic ear – that was one of Susan’s gifts. The best nurse you could ever hope for!

Since Susan’s battle with cancer began mid-2016, she helped several friends along the way with their own battle with cancer. She was taking care of her family and friends every time she saw them, even at her last birthday where she had the pleasure of visiting with eight live bunnies, amidst lots of patting and laughter of family and several long-time friends.

Susan will be deeply missed by her dear son, Ryan; her husband, Randy; her mother, Lila; her brother, Scott; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, as well as her colleagues in Endocrinology and Cardiology. She was predeceased by her father, Harold, and her grandparents on both sides.

Special thanks to her dear friend, April, for nursing her after her first surgery, and also in her final weeks. And special thanks to the staff at the Dulcina Hospice where Susan spent her final weeks.

During her illness, Susan learned of the plight of many cancer patients who cannot afford their medications, and who cannot afford to eat well, sometimes if at all. She has asked that donations be made to the Calgary Foodbank in her name (www.calgaryfoodbank.com).

Funeral Services will be held at St. Thomas United Church (100 Hawkwood Blvd NW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, March 23, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. Reception to follow at the church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Susan Tychkowsky, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  6. Randy and Ryan, and to all of Susan’s family, I can’t even begin to describe the love that I know she had for you. My heart is very heavy and saddened for you with her passing. Tragic and unjust for all she had to endure over the past two+ years. But a fighter with such enduring strength…the Energizer Bunny I liked to call her.
So very blessed am I to have worked so closely with Susan over the past seven years. Not only were we colleagues but friends, and I have been touched by an Angel. And to experience her return to the clinic each time she was able, meant so much, and she was in her element…..nursing like only she could. She touched so many lives. Susan was an amazing and special soul, and I will miss her greatly.
My heart goes out to you, may you eventually find some peace. Sending special healing thought to you.

  9. So sorry to hear of Susan’s passing. I first worked with her at the Holy Cross Hospital on 5th Floor. Then on PCU 81 at Foothills Medical Centre. Susan was such a kind, gentle, empathetic and compassionate nurse. She really did love her bunnies! Then you guys moved into a house on the same street as my brother and his family. My nephew Ben and Ryan were in the same classes at school. Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss. The city has lost a really wonderful nurse.

Always finding time to give patients that extra TLC and comfort. Susan, I hope we made your last weeks as comfortable as possible, we owe you that. Condolences to the family and it feels as if we know you as we heard of the many stories in the break room. Rest in peace.
