November 25, 1935 – Edinburgh, Scotland
November 22, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

John Gilmore Turnbull, MB, ChB, D.Obst. RCOG, CD, dearly beloved husband of the late Marjorie, loved and cherished father of Fiona and Alan, loving father-in-law of Allen and Robin, grandfather of Iain, Sara and Hamish, and brother-in-law of Audrey and Mirko, passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2018 after a short illness.

John was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and educated at Edinburgh Academy and Fettes College. Following in the footsteps of his father, John studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1959. In 1961 he married Marjorie, his childhood sweetheart, and they settled in Musselburgh where John was a family doctor and Marjorie dedicated herself to raising their two children. In 1969, they immigrated to Canada, first to Leduc and then to Calgary, Alberta, where John set up his medical office in Braeside. In addition to his family medicine practice, John was a member of the medical staff at the Rockyview Hospital and the Holy Cross Hospital. In 1982 he was appointed Chief of Staff at the Glenmore Park Auxiliary and served on the Medical Advisory Council of District 7. From 1984 to 1989 John was the palliative care physician at Rockyview Hospital, a role requiring great knowledge, insight and compassion, and of which he was extremely proud. As well as various hospital staff committees and boards, John served on the board of PALS, the pet hospital visitation program. John was awarded the Canadian Decoration for his service in the 1970’s as Medical Officer in the Reserves for the 2554 PPCLI Cadet Corps.
John and Marjorie took great pride in their family and much-loved dogs and cats. They celebrated their Scottish heritage and attended many Highland Games, and put on fantastic parties for the Canadian and expat community in Calgary. A life-long golfer, and member of Canyon Meadows Golf Club, John was also an avid squash player, tennis player and lover of music and literature. John will be profoundly and forever missed by his family; and he will be missed by his good friends, who were very important to him. Lately, John was fortunate to have found a loving friend Lorraine, who brought him companionship and happiness.

The family’s gratitude to Sharon Holbrook and the Home Care team for their understanding and care over several years is immeasurable. The compassionate care provided by Dr. Young and staff of Unit 68, South Campus Hospital is also deeply appreciated by the family. If friends so desire, the family suggests donations be made in memory of John to the Calgary Humane Society,

Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, 403-243-8200) on Friday, December 14, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home. Condolences may be forwarded through

I would like to send my Condolences to the Turnbull family. He was our physician for many years. My late husband, Mike (Mile) Grivicic, would always provide Dr. John and his wife at Christmas time, a Croatian roasted pig, cake and Scotch that he loved so much. This was our Croatian tradition. GOD BLESS.
