Condolence Messages

  1. Michelle and Steve Kraemer :

Derek was a great friend to me. We used to solve world’s problems during our Tuesday Talks. He was the funniest, wittiest man and I will miss him desperately. My husband had a nice relationship with him as well, and they would brag about fishing. He donated his kayak to Steve which prompted us to get one for me. Whenever we kayak, Derek will be in our noggins with Beatles music playing.

  12. So very sorry for your loss. Carolyn, Leanne…your husband/dad always made me feel welcome when I was staying with you for a dog event. Although he wasn’t always well, he always made an effort to say hello and took genuine interest in how me and my dogs were doing. A kind man, indeed. My thoughts are with you. Deb

  15. A sadness has swept over me. He was my big brother and I always looked up to him – particularly when we were much younger. He had ridiculously good construction skills in so many different trades – I have few if any. We always greeted one another with the term of endearment “ello boy”. That will never happen again. Peace at last boy.

  16. You were more like a big brother to the three of us than a cousin. You lived in our basement then across the street, and took the p#$& out of us on a regular basis…just like a big brother. We will miss you dear cousin. Will miss our phone chats. Godspeed.

  18. My Uncle D was my very favourite Uncle. He always had a strong opinion on every matter and even if you weren’t a part of the conversation, he was entertaining and witty to overhear. He seemed to leave everyone he ever met with some tidbit of information they didn’t know before, and if you were lucky enough to spend regular amounts of time with him, you’d know him to be a generous and caring individual. I have many good memories of the time he spent with us renovating our house in Bragg Creek. Moving to Canada was easier for our family because of him, and it’s hard to imagine him not being around anymore. I hope that Aunty Carolyn and my cousins can take comfort in that he’s now at peace. Love you all!

  19. Carolyn … my deepest sympathy to you and your family. I remember when you and Derek first arrived in Canada and lived just up the street from us. His tea making skills made me shudder!!! I haven’t seen either of you for a few years but have thought of all of you often. Please know Orv & I are thinking of you and remembering some of the laughs Derek brought us over the years. May the memories you all made over the years bring you comfort at this time and help you carry on. With sincere & deepest sympathy …. Bev Morash

  21. Uncle D will be sorely missed by us all. I am so regretful that I didn’t spend more time by his side over the past few years before his last week earthside. He was the funniest man, never failing to put a smile on my face. He was creative and artistic and for those he loved, he was fiercely loyal and truly kind. Just the other day I sat outside in the pergola he so generously built for my family, listening to Pink Floyd and Elton John, hoping that he was listening too from wherever he sits. Uncle Derek told me with much love, in his last few days, that I was one of his favourite nurses. As a future nurse, I will remember this comment forever and I will remember my Uncle D whenever I offer comfort to patients and their families. To my Aunty Carolyn and my cousins, I hope the coming weeks bring you a sense of calm and comfort knowing that he is now free from pain and has finally found rest in his place of peace. We love you and are here for you always. Xoxo Tors

  23. I will remember my Uncle Derek fondly as an extremely hard worker and a wonderfully creative mind. Using a bobcat and a bleak patch of mud as his paintbrush and canvas, he conjured up marvelous ideas that were simply inconceivable to most. He crafted and experimented, built up, knocked down, swore loudly, rebuilt, and then joked about his failed attempts. He worked away until his ideas came to life. His lighthearted personality and work ethic are something that most of us can only hope for.
Uncle D was a man of strong convictions and I will always admire the way he lived life on his own terms. He went “against the grain” wearing his navy sweatpants and a simple cotton t-shirt wherever he went. I will forever miss hearing his greeting “Ello boy” with Dad, and listening intently to their stories and childhood reminiscing.
My love and thoughts are with Aunty Carolyn, Leanne, Elton, Brad, and family.
Rest easy Uncle D, you deserve it! xox

I knew Derek first as my football buddy and mentor. I played many a game with him and went to many “ after” parties at their acreage in Sherwood Park. I have always admired his creativity and stamina. He was always fair and brutally honest. He became family and will always be eternally Uncle D and have a very special place in my heart.
All my love and condolences to Carolyn, Leanne, Elton,Brad and family’s. Xox
