TRUESDALE, Alexandra Jeanette

February 6, 1937 – Calgary, Alberta
January 13, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

With a combination of sadness and peace of mind, we announce the gentle passing of Jan Truesdale on January 13th, 2019 at the age of 81.

With perfectly quaffed hair and meticulously coordinated bling, her last days were spent happily harassing all visitors and healthcare workers, ensuring nobody left her room without a smile.

Jan’s professional career spanned over four decades in the field of radiology, where she would positively impact the lives of thousands of patients. Her simple guiding principle was “always treat people with kindness and respect”. Along the way, she made many life long friendships which she would always treasure.

Upon retirement, Jan became a champion for underprivileged children in our community for almost two decades, spending countless hours during the year ensuring that dozens of kindergarten students received new winter clothing and a Christmas lunch of great abundance. “Grandma T” became a much beloved figure, which only motivated her to work harder for “her children”. Many thanks to the army of volunteer recruits that were marshalled for assistance over the years.

Her shopping escapades were legendary. Her Boxing Day dinners simply over-the-top. Her golfing rounds were profitable, particularly against her son. Her “little car accidents” were…..well…..numerous.

Jan is survived by her son Jim and daughter-in-law Vivian, along with the two brightest lights in Jan’s life, her grandchildren Ashley and Alexander. While her health allowed, Jan’s calendar would be prioritized around sports events, school concerts and family dinners. Nothing was impossible if it meant her grandchildren would be happy.

Jan was forever grateful for Vivian’s love and tenderness through the years in making sure that her every need was satisfied. From booking medical appointments to ensuring she had everything to make life comfortable, Vivian gave of herself tirelessly.

A special thank you to all of Jan’s health care aides and companions for their compassion and loving care over the years.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael Catholic Community (800 – 85th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.

For those inclined, bright colors and bling will be appropriate attire to celebrate a life well lived and representative of the joy that Jan brought to so many lives.

Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Jan’s memory to The Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, 2888 Shaganappi Trail NW, Calgary, AB T3B 6A8, Telephone: (403) 955-8818 in support of the Rotary Flames Pediatric Hospice. www.childrenshospital.ab.ca

In living memory of Jan Truesdale, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

Condolence Messages

  1. Pauline Ashley :

My most sincere sympathy to Jim, Vivian, Ashley and Alexander.
As a former colleague going back to our time at the Holy Cross Hospital Cancer Clinic site, I worked with Jan, when Radiology and Nursing were closely connected in a very small area. Thinking of that time brings many fond memories. That did change after the opening of the Tom Baker Centre as we worked in quite different part of the Hospital
I shall always remember Jan’s generosity, and ability to produce a gift when least expected, or a fancy morsel of sweetness when some occasion arose.
Jan will be missed deeply by all who knew her.

I was saddened to see that your mom had passed. We spent many days at Bearspaw Golf and Country Club over the years. Your mom would arrive early and could be found knitting items for her “special “ children before her tee time.
I pray that you’ll find comfort in your many memories you shared with her. A lovely and compassionate lady.

I am very sorry to have read about the death of your mother. I have great memories of her cheery disposition, kindness and engaging personality. It was always a pleasure to bump into at a tennis tournament. It is difficult to lose a parent, but I trust you are getting all the love and support you need from family and friends.

    Jim and Vivian and family,
We were sad to hear the news about your Mom passing away–I have great memories of her as part of our Diagnostic Imaging Foothills Hospital team in SSB over the years. She was wonderful to the patients, a very hard worker and set a great example for young staff! She was also a wonderful chef, very organized as she had her mashed potatoes made for Christmas around Nov 11th! She had all the DI Management staff over for a buffet dinner when your father Ron was alive and had so many dishes made we felt like we couldn’t even manage a taste of everything! She was very generous and thoughtful and brought wonderful butter tarts and strawberry tarts to our Management meetings! Her coordination of the “Breakfasts With Santa” every year was outstanding as she would have handmade so many of the Santa gifts for staff! I am sorry I am unable to attend her service this Thursday but will say a prayer for her that day.

  10. To Jim, Vivian and family,
Jan’s obituary was so perfect, she would love it, I’m sure.
I had the pleasure of keeping her hair looking spiffy for
so many years I can’t count them. Her loyalty was amazing
and I was sorry to hear her say she could not come to see
me in Chestermere any more. Our visits were filled with
both beautifying and wisdom. One of her sayings I’ll always remember from her father was “we all put our pants on one leg at a time.” Love that saying.
Your mom will be remembered and missed.

    Jim and Vivian and family:

I am very sorry for you loss!! If there was only 1 word to describe Jan (but there are so many beautiful words that describes her) it would be CLASSY!!! I work at Charlesglen in the service department and I helped her a lot over the years when she owned her highlander. She talked about her volunteer work and would bring in her knitting if she was going to wait for her car to be complete. I still have the scarf that she made me 🙂 At Christmas time she would bring in 2 huge trays of the BEST strawberry tarts for the service staff to enjoy. Like I said CLASSY. I am thinking of you all as your morn and celebrate this special lady’s life. PS…..she did have the best jewelry.

As Jan’s Chiropractor for many years, I would always appreciate the “grief” she would give me when she came in for an appointment. With a glint in her eye and more than the occasional box of Tim Hortons donuts for our staff, Jan was always a joy and the best kind of challenge to be around. I will miss her. God rest her soul and give comfort and happy memories to those she leaves behind.

Hi Jim, Vivian, Ashley and Alexander,

We are truly saddened by the passing of your Mom/Grandma.
Please know that all of you meant the world to her. She spoke so proudly about you, to us all the time! Her love for you was truly limitless. I know you know this, now and forever.
For Cindy/I, she accepted and treated us with the utmost respect and kindness. We will think of her fondly and will ensure we do our very best to treat others like she treated us. “Mrs. T” was simply awesome.

  18. Michael Pierson :

Deepest sympathy to Jim, Vivian and family. I have great memories of Jan in our connection through the Rotary Club of Calgary. Our club sponsored her and her group of knitters as they would knit toques, mitts and scarves for young children who were in need. We would supply yarn and other supplies and she would take it from there, knitting like crazy and visiting the various kindergartens and elementary schools with their gifts. She was so giving and generous with her time, resources and kindness. She would uplift anyone, always see the positive and do it with a big smile, a laugh and a tease.

Dear Jim, Viv, Ashley & Alexander,
We are so sorry for the loss. Your Mother was an amazing lady …excelled at all she did. She started golfing upon retirement and broke 90 soon after. Her idea of Christmas baking was 52 pans of picture perfect squares, cut to perfection, that she so generously shared with her friends. Weeks of work! Jan loved bling. She wore a sparkling necklace and earrings everyday. Regularly we met at Market Mall for coffee and inevitably left the mall with a new necklace she loved! Jan had lots of spunk and a quick comeback for everyone, yet was so appreciative of kindness and good service. We will all miss her.
