TOURAND, Mary Louise

September 28, 1940 –Vancouver, British Columbia
June 21, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Mary Louise Tourand, beloved wife of Orville Tourand, passed away on Friday, June 21, 2019 at the age of 78 years.

Mary was born in Vancouver, BC on September 28, 1940 to Walter and Phyllis Thompson as the second of five children. After living in Monte Lake, the family found their way to Blue River, BC where Mary’s mother assisted with the family budget by taking in washing and cooking for the local cookhouse. This is where Mary honed her amazing skills in baking that her family enjoyed her entire life. Mary married Orville in the fall of 1957, and they enjoyed almost sixty-two wonderful years of marriage. They lived in Blue River, Kamloops, Victoria, and Pemberton before finally settling in Calgary, AB in 2001. Mary accomplished much through her life and was particularly proud of her support to the Variety club and Canuck Place charities. She worked outside the home in various positions throughout the years including matron for the RCMP at the Pemberton Police detachment, bookkeeper for the family business, accounts payable clerk at a window and door manufacturing company in Calgary and her favorite, as a retail associate for Purdy’s Chocolate in Sunridge Mall. Wherever Mary worked she brought joy to her co-workers and made lifelong friends along the way. Mary enjoyed feeding her family but especially baking for her loved ones and made the most delicious bread, buns, cookies, nanaimo bars, butter tarts and Christmas cake. Mary also loved to play cards such as 31 and was the family cribbage champion. Mary’s most memorable vacations were with her husband Orville at resort casinos in Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada and Bonner’s Ferry, Idaho. Mary will be most remembered for her generosity and dedication to her family. She never missed an important anniversary or celebration and made sure her family felt the enormous love she carried in her heart for them. Mary had a special talent for writing notes to loved ones, making them feel like the most important person in her life. No matter where you were in the world, Mary somehow managed to get a special card to you with the perfect verse that you needed to hear at that time in your life. Mary’s most important talent was bringing out the best in people around her – being in her presence made you want to be a better person because she saw you as a better person.

Besides her loving husband Orville, Mary is survived by her two daughters, Debra McLelland of Kamloops, BC and Judy Tourand of Calgary, AB; one son and one daughter-in-law, Phillip and Donna Tourand of Port Alberni, BC; four grandchildren and one step-grandson, Lindsey (Cheryl) Tourand of Bowen Island, BC, Janna (Torsten) Ball of North Vancouver, BC, Devan (Chantalle) Miner of Kamloops, BC, Ashley (Julien) Mclellend of Squamish, BC and Justin (Alexandra) Wiggins of Edmonton, BC; four great-grandchildren, Olive and Avery Tourand of Bowen Island, BC, Caiman Ball of North Vancouver, BC, and Mila Miner of Kamloops, BC. Mary is also survived by her two sisters and one brother-in-law, Maureen and Don Herting of Salmon Arm, BC, and Stephanie Fowles of Kamloops, BC; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Phyllis and Walter Thompson; brother Stewart Thompson, sister Velma Dale and great-grandson River Tourand.

Mary leaves a hole in our hearts too great to fill.

Mary was one of my Purdy’s “grandmas” and one of the kindest people out there. I loved all of our talks, hearing her stories about life in general and I learned many things from her. Even after we stopped working together, she would keep in touch through cards for Christmases and birthdays—always lovingly and thoughtfully written. I’m so thankful I got to meet such a wonderful lady. My condolences to Orville, her children and extended family.
