August 5, 1927 – Fort Frances, Ontario
December 11, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Gordon Thorne of Calgary, AB, passed away on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 at the age of 91 years.

Gordon was born in Fort Frances, ON with many fond memories as a fishing guide and working in logging. As a young boy, Gordon moved to Winnipeg where he joined the Canadian Military probably a little younger than he should have. He continued with the Canadian military and was a combat veteran of the Korean War. He later completed several peace keeping missions in Cyprus and other places abroad. He was a proud member of PPCLI. Most recently, Gordon had a passion for his yard, his garden, amazing seasonal displays, and cooking, especially his apple pies.

While stationed in Calgary, Gordon met the love of his life, Carol (nee Harris) who he eventually married. The Military had their young family move between Victoria and Calgary and ultimately settling in Calgary raising their three children. After leaving the military, Gordon worked with Sears Canada until his retirement.

Gordon is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, David and Cinda Thorne of Leduc, AB and Dan and Val Thorne of Kelowna, BC; and his daughter, Deanna Thorne of Kelowna, BC. Gordon will also be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Jennifer and Kayla Thorne of Leduc, AB and Brianna and Jenna Thorne of Kelowna, BC.

He was predeceased by wife Carol Thorne (nee Harris); his brothers, Leonard Thorne and Frank Thorne; and his sister, Phyllis Patmore.

  2. Our neighbourhood “Gentle Giant” has left us leaving so many memories to those left behind. Gordon we will never forget you. We will miss your beautiful smile whenever you greeted people walking by, you inspired me with your positive outlook on life.
Thank you for being the snow angel for the street. It became a race to see who could wake up and get the streets done, we know you loved doing it, so tried not to fuss about it.
Gordon you hosted yearly potlucks at Christmas and the meals were wonderful. The stories and laughter at these potlucks were so much fun. Your homemade apple pies and butter tarts were famous and watching you host these potlucks in your home after the age of 80 made us all realize you had figured out how to live to 91 years. I can only hope that when you walk through those gates that there will be biggest and most colourfully lit Christmas tree that you have ever seen, as Gordon I can’t think of anyone who deserves it more.
Now we say to all the family members, Dave, Cinda, Deanna, Dan,Val ,Jennifer, Kayla, Brianna, and Jenna, our thoughts are with you all at this time. He was proud of each and every one of you. As you sit for your Christmas dinner share a few stories of your Dad and Grandpa and the special one of a kind man we will all miss.

  5. When I was in Canada, living across the street from Gordon at the Riley house, I remember one summer day when I went with Barb to visit Gordon. We were siting on his front steps trying to count all the bird houses on Gordon’s property but we had all had a little too much to drink and just couldn’t do it. We laughed about it and this is my fondest memory of spending time with Gordon.
