THOMPSON, Violet Wanda

October 2, 1927 – Winnipeg, Manitoba
December 24, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Violet (Vi) Thompson (nee Lulewick) of Calgary, Alberta passed away peacefully on the morning of December 24, 2018, at the age of 91 years.

Vi is survived by her beloved husband Leonard Samuel Thompson, her three loving daughters Suzanne (Tom), Sharon, and Kathy (Ken) as well as granddaughter Katie (Eric) and great granddaughter Faye. Vi was predeceased by her siblings, brothers John, Joe and Rudy, and sisters Ida, Helen and Jane.

Vi was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 2, 1927. It was in Winnipeg where she met Len, the love of her life, and where on June 17, 1950 they were married. Len’s work took them first to Toronto and then to Maryland Place in Calgary where they spent a happy life together raising their three daughters. Faced with numerous health challenges throughout her adult life, Vi refused to let anything compromise her mobility and independence. Her determination to enjoy life on her own terms amazed the family and medical community alike.

Words to describe Vi: a trooper, fighter, positive, cheerful, lovely, defiant, a riot, downright stubborn. She loved to entertain, loved her home, her yard, her flowers, and her wonderful summer vacations at cottages in both Manitoba and Ontario. Music was a big part of her life. She loved to sing. Vi was surrounded by a loving family, good friends and neighbours. The home on Maryland often resonated with familiar voices and laughter…..LOTS of laughter. Vi’s spirit, resilience, “serce” (heart) and contagious excitement about all things beautiful in the world remain as lessons in a life well lived.

Our family wishes to gratefully acknowledge the excellent care Vi has received. First from the wonderful Rysa, whose loving care allowed Vi to comfortably remain in the family home for many years. Secondly, from the excellent staff at the Mayfair Care Centre, who provided compassion, kindness and good humour, treating Vi with dignity and respect from beginning to end.

Vi, Mom, you are “MARVELLOUS” and will remain in our hearts always.

A memorial service will not be held. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada or the charity of your choice. Condolences may be forwarded to www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
