THIESSEN, Robert “Rob” Vaughn

July 14, 1970 – Winnipeg, Manitoba
October 29, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Rob, beloved partner of Sofia Rosa Baril of Calgary, AB, passed away on October 29, 2018 at the age of 48 years.

Rob was born July 14, 1970 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He spent his early years on the farm in Greysville, Manitoba. In 1981 the family moved to Calgary where Rob attended Dr. Egbert Jr High and then graduated from James Fowler High School in 1988. In 1989, Rob moved to Linden, Alberta to work with Lilydale Hatchery on the farm, where he stayed for four years. Although he moved around from Acme, Lethbridge, and then back to Calgary he stayed working with Lilydale for almost 20 years.

Rob and Caroline had their daughter Stephanie in September of 1991. He always referred her as his “Little Steph Stien” spending lots of time together on the farm, skiing and going to the movies. In 2003, Rob met Sofia at a Lilydale Christmas Party, and together they welcomed their son Josh in March of 2005. Rob continued to be great hands on father, the ski trips, movie dates, and outdoor adventures continued. Rob was passionate about the outdoors, his love of agriculture, outdoor sports, and adventures shined through in everything he did.
Wherever Rob went he built a friendship with everyone. He was a very compassionate, generous person and never had a bad word to say about anyone. People who knew Rob loved him for who he was. Adventurous, outgoing, boisterous, and the life of the party.

Robbie truly lived life to the fullest!!!

Beside his loving partner Sofia, Rob is survived by daughter Stephanie; son Joshua; parents Sharon and Bob; mother and father-in-law Edward and Fatima DeGroot; brother Jeff (Laura); sister Melanie; and his brother-in-law Joe (Cori). Rob is also survived by his nephews William, Jordon, Zachary, Justin, Kyler, Jayden, and Blake and niece’s Hailey, Jaiden, and Jessie.

Rob was predeceased by his Uncle Randy Blatz, Uncle Roy Webster, Auntie Maureen Hiebert, Uncle Peter Weibe, and Cousin Chad Blatz.

Memorial Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street S.E., Calgary, AB) on Monday, November 5, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in Hospitality Center. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

  10. Rick Thiessen :

Thanks for sharing this obituary. I’m sorry i won’t be able to attend the memorial. The Washington Thiessen’s all send our deepest sympathies and add or own sorrow to yours in the loss of my cousin Robbie. No words for how shocking this must be for the family.

I have so many great memories of him, my closest in age “double cousin”. So cool to have him as a playmate at both Thiessen and Blatz gatherings. Always looked forward to Bob and Sharon coming over because Robbie was coming! Eating from the garden and exploring both our boyhood farms, toys trucks and dirt, snow forts and sports. We would play until we dropped, literally asleep on the floor by the time they left. Rob was always last one standing though. No surprise he grew up to be the life of the party!

He grew up to be such a friendly, likeable man. A smile would break across his face to see you, wrinkle up his cheeks and high forehead, expose white teeth and light up in a look that simply said ‘welcome’. What a great story teller. Articulate and always curious about you, too.

I’m filled with sadness that he’s gone. My heart is with you as your mourn. I pray peace and comfort for the family. I’m reminded again what a beautiful, violently brief run Life is. Rob, rest in peace.

    Grace and Peace, Rick

  11. I’d like to offer my deepest condolences to Rob’s family on his loss. He really had a personality that was larger than life, the nicest guy you could ever hope to meet, and absolutely the life of the party, every time. I always regretted losing touch with him and Jeff since the old days at the hatchery and the Lazy H, but I’ll never forget him. Rest in peace.

  34. I met Rob back in 2013. Rob was great with customers. He was a very hard worker, he was very caring, compassionate, energetic, positive and he definitely had a lot of fun selling and serving customers. Rob really enjoyed the feed industry and the social aspect of dealing with customers. He definitely made many friends in the industry over the years as we say yesterday. Rob’s experience in the poultry sector proved to be very valuable to him and the company. I travelled with him as needed and we had many good nutrition visits on the colony. Rob worked very closely with customers and he was very well received on the farm. His expert knowledge on poultry, dairy and swine management was very valuable and it was very much appreciated by customers.

Rob has many friends and colleagues in Masterfeeds and in the feed industry. Rob would organize fun BBQ’s on the colony: like the one he organized at the hunting camp at Twilight Colony. That was an excellent get together with Albert and Lawrence and the team. There were many good visits at (just to name a few) at Neudorf, Cloverleaf, Standard, Blue Sky and on many other colonies. There were many good get togethers at the Banff Pork Seminar: BBQ’s with customers and a lot of good visiting. Working with Rob was a lot of fun and he was always very positive and helpful. Just last week we really enjoyed his company and efforts at our Sights Symposium and at the Poultry Service Industry workshop in Banff,

Rob was fun to travel with: would educate whoever was in the truck on the most recent music (hard and heavy!) and the hot topics on Howard Stern’s satellite channels!

Rob wold always talk about what he was doing with his family and friends and he was an avid skier and he loved the outdoors!

Rob rest in peace, you left us way to early, you can watch over us from heaven now and make sure everyone is having fun and looking after each other, helping others and living life to the fullest like you did! Love you buddy! Will keep your memories alive always ! Your friend Vince

  35. A Story Of Rob’s Life, from John and Fred
Rob wasn’t only a feed salesman, he was a true friend his heart was always in it, doing his best! The moment Rob walked in the door, the atmosphere lighted up, just putting a smile on your face. The way he presented himself made you feel great with his positive outlook in life. With life’s challenges that we all face at times, Rob was the kind of guy who manage to keep a smile on your face. Just a little story of his kindness: there was this one weekend we ran empty on feed at the barn and he had to run 6 hours out of his way to get it to the farm, he said I can do it no problem at all….And he did it! That’s the kind of guy Rob was he put others first, Rob’s friendship will be greatly missed! Rest in peace my friend
