TAVARES, Assunção

May 18, 1929 – Sao Miguel, Azores
June 7, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Assunção our deeply loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on June 7, 2018 at the age of 89 years.

Assunção was born in Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel Azores. At the age of fourteen she took up sewing as an apprentice and excelled at her craft until she could no longer pick up a needle. She worked as a personal seamstress to some of the island’s most influential people. She also kept very busy with her association JOC and enjoyed the excursions the most.

In 1957 she married her long time boyfriend Jose, and together they had four children between 1958 and 1961, sadly losing a twin at the age of 33 days. The family moved to Canada in June of 1970 where she continued her work as a seamstress from home and acquired many clients.

She was a devout catholic and never missed her weekly mass. She was a member of Our Lady Fatima’s Senior’s group which brought her great happiness in socializing with her friends and always helped where she could. Assunção loved people, going out, socializing, feasts, processions and all kinds of family gatherings. She always showed the utmost kindness and genuine liking to those she came across.
Her strength and resilience has been a great lesson and an inspiration and our love for her truly unforgettable.

Assunção is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Lucy and Alfredo; her grandchildren, Veronica (Jason), Dustin and Kody; great-granddaughter Josephine “Josie”; and numerous extended families in Portugal, the USA, Brampton and Montreal.

She was predeceased by her husband Jose; her children, Jorge, Rosa Maria and Miguel. Her father Joao Sebastiao; her mother Assunção Rocha; her siblings, Carlos, Fernando, Guilherme, Maria Joana, Ilda, Antonieta, Joao and Manuel.
