TAN, Chap Kay

January 13, 1945 – Penang, Malaysia
July 14, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

Chap Kay Tan, beloved husband of We Hiang Tan (nee Chuah) of Calgary, Alberta passed away peacefully with his family beside him, on Sunday, July 14, 2019 at the age of 74 years.

An entrepreneur at heart, Chap was not afraid to try new things and valued any and all experiences good or bad. Traveling from Malaysia to Europe with little money, he was robbed and found himself homeless and without a passport to continue his travels. As a result, he decided to work as a dishwasher and kitchen helper in Belgium. He always taught us that the main things you need to survive are a roof over your head and food so the restaurant business was a practical solution that became a key foundation in his life.

He decided to try his hand at running a shrimp cracker business while working part time. With sheer drive and a strong work ethic he baked, packaged, sold and delivered his shrimp crackers. He was able to sustain this for over a year. He shared that although he did not make any profit this year; it was such a good experience and helped guide him for future restaurant ownership.

Chap then went on to own and operate Restaurant Shanghai, in Belgium for 10 years. After his family immigrated to Canada in 1983, he opened Double Dragon restaurant in Calgary, Alberta. Chap proudly retired in 2000.

Along his journey, Chap met many people and helped many more. He was well known for feeding anyone that came by; the plumber, the kitchen counter contractor, the fence repairman and many more. He truly befriended anyone that was able to enjoy a conversation with him – he spoke often of his latest friend the oxygen delivery man. Chap enjoyed anything to do with cooking, traveling and was most proud of all his grandchildren. He very much enjoyed his Ipad that housed many photos and memories as well as cooking videos that he watched endlessly. He also enjoyed face timing his siblings in Bangkok almost daily. He lived a simple life with few material possessions but an abundance of experience, family and love. He never hesitated to help friends and strangers alike, and always gave others the benefit of the doubt. Most will remember him for his jovial nature, his genuine smile and his crispy pork!

Besides his loving wife, Chap is survived by his four daughters; Siew Yong (Rob), Siew Wan (Rob), Siew Peng (Mike) and Siew Ying (Steve); ten grandchildren, Zach, Dylan, Hannah, Kai, Maya, Cole, Aliah, Taylor, Megan and Alexis. He is also survived by his five siblings; Chek Kok Tang, Marut Tangnirunkul, Anucha Tan, Thada Tan and Chai Hong Chern; as well as numerous sisters and brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Chap is predeceased by his parents, Choon Sneath Tan, Gaik Siam Goh and one sister Yang Hong Tan.

Relatives and friends are invited to Buddhist Prayers and Viewing at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North Calgary, AB) on Friday, July 19, 2019 at 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
