Lorna Switzer beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2019 at the age of 88 years.
Lorna was born on May 10th, 1931, in Calgary, Alberta. She grew up in Bowness and has many fond memories of the community especially Bowness Park. She graduated from the Western Canada High School in 1949 and went to work for the Government of Canada Income Tax department where she met the love of her life Ken Switzer. They married on June 2, 1951. She was very involved with Girl Guides of Canada as a child and then as an adult. She was a leader and became a District Commissioner. The highlight of Lorna’s guiding career was when she took a group of Girl Guides to World Jamboree in England. Lorna was an organizer and hard worker in many organizations throughout her life and was never shy to take on a challenge. Besides Girl Guides, she was a Madden Lioness with the Lions Club, helped at the Airdrie Food Bank and Over 50 Club. She enjoyed singing and was an avid amateur photographer.
Lorna is survived by her children, Vicki (Tony) Schulmeister of Castor, AB; Doug (Rhonda) Switzer of Calgary, AB; Russell (Diane) Switzer of West Vancouver, BC; her grandchildren, Grant (Raelene) Schulmeister of Castor; Darren (Megan) Schulmeister of Beaumont; Shawn (Amanda) Schulmeister of Castor; Jason Zabos of Edmonton, AB; Shanda (Dennis) Gane of Edmonton; her great-grandchildren, Summer and Brody Schulmeister of Castor; Jake, Grace and Brett Schulmeister of Beaumont; Caydence, Norah, and Leo Schulmeister of Castor; Zobi and Sylith Gane of Edmonton; her step-brother Robert Gillies and his family; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Lorna was predeceased by her husband Ken; her mother Edith Warren Gillies; father Waldo Warren; step-father David Gillies; father and mother-in-law Louis and Grace Switzer; as well as Ken’s brothers, sisters and their spouses.
Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Airdrie, 300 Towerlane Drive) on Saturday, September, 7, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. Graveside Service to follow at Airdrie Cemetery.
