SWANSON, Dr. Harold Alfred

Dr. Harold Alfred Swanson peacefully passed away Saturday, May 6, 2017 after a brief illness at the Rockyview General Hospital.

Harold was born August 21, 1929 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He graduated from the University of Manitoba College of Medicine in 1954. He completed his residency in radiology at the Winnipeg General Hospital, followed by a 6-month scholarship at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C. In 1971, Harold completed a fellowship in Neuroradiology at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, Queen Square, London, England. He then served as Chief Registrar for a year. Harold completed sabbaticals in Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Harold served on the Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta from 1974 to 1985 and acted as president in 1981. He was the Director of Diagnostic Imaging at the Calgary General Hospital for many years until his retirement in 1995. Harold was instrumental in bringing several innovative technologies to the Calgary General Hospital including CT and MRI. He continued to work as a Neuroradiologist into his early 80s.

Harold was passionate about improving the health care system and entered politics in an attempt to save the Calgary General Hospital. On September 1, 2005, Harold was awarded the Alberta Centennial Medal in recognition of his outstanding service to the people and province of Alberta. He was very modest regarding his accomplishments in life.

Harold loved travelling, reading, history, movies, photography, painting and intellectual debate. He enjoyed living an active and healthy lifestyle. Above all he loved his family.

Harold is survived by his loving wife Jeanette and his children, Lissa (Fred), Julie (Ken), Bruce, Peter (Tannis), and Paul (Em); grandchildren, Alix, Emily, Andrew, Sophie, Max and Jessica; sister, Pearl Wickberg; brother, Dr. Gary Swanson (Colena); Mary Dawn Swanson; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Alfred and Gwendolyn Swanson.

We love you and miss you deeply.

Harold’s family would like to thank Dr. Wong, Dr. Mitchell and the staff on Unit 71 (RGH) for all their care and support.

Funeral Services will be held at Christ Church Elbow Park (3602 – 8th Street S.W.) on Monday, May 15, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial tributes may be made directly to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation or charity of your choice.
