SUTHERLAND, Wayne Robert

August 2, 1952 – Vancouver, British Columbia
December 14, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Wayne, beloved husband of Janice Tackaberry of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, December 14, 2018 at the age of 66 years.

Wayne was born in Vancouver and grew up playing lacrosse in Burnaby, eventually playing Jr. A with Burnaby Cablevision and professionally with the Montreal Quebecois in the original NLL. He also played Sr. A for the Nanaimo Timbermen before bringing his talents to Calgary with the Sr. B Mountaineers. Wayne was a coach of the Mountaineer Junior B Lacrosse Club for many years, including eleven appearances at Founders Cup Junior B National Tournament with three Bronze, two Silver and one Gold medal finish. He received the James McFall award in 2015 for his outstanding contribution to the sport of lacrosse in Alberta. The RMLL also recently designated a coaching award in Wayne’s name and he was the first recipient. Wayne also contributed to lacrosse in countless ways, helping many people learn to love the sport along the way. Wayne also loved to golf, travel and was an avid theatre goer. But above all else, spending time with family and friends was the most important thing to Wayne. He was employed in the Calgary oil & gas industry for forty years and was also an entrepreneur, owning several coffee shops and working in the travel industry.

Cherish your yesterdays, dream your tomorrows, and live your todays. Carpe Diem.

Besides his devoted wife, Janice, Wayne is survived by his daughter, Delaney Tackaberry; his brothers, Dave (Nina) Sutherland and Chris (Gloria) Sutherland; brothers-in-law Hugh Tackaberry (Suzanne Champeaux) and Glenn (Cheryl) Tackaberry; and sister-in-law Nola (Wes) Shewfelt; Wayne will also be lovingly remembered by nieces and nephews, Kristina, Andrew, Scott, Kyle, Kimberly, Brendan, Aaron, and Dannica; and his friend Lauren Cross.

Funeral Services will be held at McDougall United Church (8516 Athabasca Street S.E., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow at the church. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Special thanks to the amazing caregivers at Unit 47 at Foothills Medical Centre Palliative Care and the many doctors and nurses who were with Wayne throughout his battle with cancer.

In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to any TD Canada Trust branch in trust for Delaney’s education (account number 8079-6151892) or a charity of your choice.

We were all shocked and deeply saddened to hear about Wayne’s passing. Wayne was an incredible coach and personality on the lacrosse scene. As a family we shared many memories, travels and laughs with him while he coached our son, Nat. You can’t help but love a guy who believes in, and supports your kid, when it seems nobody else does. It’s been some time since we’ve seen Wayne and we had hoped he was winning this fight. We will always cherish his memory and we are grateful to have known him. Rest in Peace, Sudsy, you will be missed.

“Suds” will be sorely missed by his many oilpatch friends, going as far back to his days working at Dome Petroleum…we will all remember his zest for life and his terrific sense of humour…he was a “glass-half-full” guy, who had a special way to raise the vibe in the room. RIP good friend, and condolences to Janice and family.

Our hearts are filled with hope that when the sadness passes you will be left only with rich memories of your life with Wayne. From what we were told he walked this path with the same inspiration that he gave to others in his work with lacrosse teams and players. We wish for you both peace and blessings

  18. My condolences to Suds’ family. He was the best coach my son had through his lacrosse years. He was hard on the boys in a respectful way and received mutual respect in return. The boys cared a lot for him and it showed during their games. My thoughts are with you today.
