SUCHA, William “Bill” Bailey

January 18, 1957 – Calgary, Alberta
December 13, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Bill Sucha, born on January 18th, 1957, passed away on December 13th, 2018. Carolyn Sucha, his loving wife, was by his side from the moment they wed until the moment Bill passed. Supporting Carolyn through this difficult time were her sons David, his wife Caroline; Steven and his wife Britney.

Bill was a cherished father, friend, co-worker, and tireless volunteer with the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League. He was a pillar in numerous communities and by the time his sons were over 21 years old he essentially had three full-time jobs.

The first of the three was being a husband and a father. He was an incredible father and an inspiring husband. He showed his two sons, David and Steven how to be men. He didn’t show them with words; he showed them how to be men through his actions. Bill taught both of his sons that being a man could be defined in many ways; from the most traditional definition of the word to the most obscure.

Bill taught his sons that being honest with loved ones was paramount in maintaining a solid foundation to any relationship. He showed his sons that even when having disagreements, it is always important to search for a middle ground and find a compromise. He taught them that empathy was the key to being human, and that it is necessary to be able to put oneself in someone else’s shoes. Through his life, they learned that it was okay to cry and show emotion; that shedding a few tears during the hard times was just as acceptable as shedding them during the times of joy, and that if you are going to do a job, you may as well do it right the first time, so that you would not have to come back to that job later; a lesson he learned from his father.

Bill was a man that loved honestly and with passion. It was evident in the way he loved his wife, Carolyn. His sons witnessed him love a woman, their mother, with the utmost passion, and that you either love with that passion or you don’t love at all; that is how he loved Carolyn. As a husband, he showed his wife that he would care for his children and care for her, regardless of what life threw at them; regardless of what circumstance led the family to where they were at any given time.

His second job was that of sales manager of an office supply company; dealing with million-dollar clients on a daily basis. He brought the similar passion that he showed for his sons and wife to his job; which was evident to anyone that worked with him. His kind and selfless nature was obvious in the respect he garnered from his co-workers and peers.

His third job was working in lacrosse, in many different roles. Bill starting as a simple supporter for his sons, to a manager of the teams Steven played for, to the president of the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League. He changed the landscape of Alberta Lacrosse forever by co-founding the Junior A Mountaineers Lacrosse Club and in doing so, created opportunities for players that may never have experienced a Junior A career. He built a team, with help from others, from the ground up. This past month, in honor of Bill’s tireless efforts within the lacrosse community, the RMLL created the “Bill Sucha Volunteer of the Year” Award as a lasting tribute to him.

Without Bill, the lives of David and Steven would be drastically different; without Bill the life of his wife would be drastically different and without Bill the landscape that is currently Alberta Lacrosse would be drastically different. With this in mind, with all the lives he touched and changed and the communities he affected, one can easily say that those communities will be a little less without Bill Sucha.

In addition to his sons, daughters-in-law, and wife, Bill is survived by his beloved grandchildren Samuel and Aubree; his brother Don (Deb), brother and sisters-in-law Sharon, Brian (Andrée), Colette, Bernadette; Steve, Margo, and Brian, his nieces and nephews, and his dear friends Dan and Terri, and Shannon and Rui. Bill was predeceased by his parents, John and Murdeana, and his father and mother in-law Frank and Anne.

The family would like to thank Dr. Bebb and Kate, and Unit 47 at the Foothills Hospital, as well as all the wonderful and caring staff at the Foothills County Hospice. In leu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in Bill’s name to the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

A Celebration of Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB) on Friday, December 28, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In living memory of Bill Sucha, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary, AB, T2X 3J3, Telephone: 403-256-9575.

  2. My sincere condolences to the Sucha Family on the passing of our friend and colleague Bill. I enjoyed working with Bill. His passion and sincerity when managing the staff who reported to him was very obvious. He always went down the path of fairness to all. Most recently Bill and I were able to share a visit. There was a twinkle in his eye when he was sharing stories about his grandchildren. Bill shared with me that he was proud of his sons and daughters in law for giving him grandchildren, who made his days brighter and happier. He spoke of the love and support that his wife gave him and his love for his family. Bill will be missed.

  16. George Sutherland :

I had the honor to work with Bill for 20 years both with Grand & Toy and Supreme Basics.
he always encouraged me to be my best in my work life.
Bill had the knack for sarcasm which was a service he would provide free of charge. He also liked to point out all the “interesting” that happen in the NE and I would point all the “interesting” things in the SE. , although in geographical definition of SE seem to be just in a little enclave of Mindapore.
I will miss him and his humor. I am very thankful I had him in my life

I have had the pleasure of working with Bill for 20 years. Bill had a certain wit about him and sarcasm was a service he supplied free of charge.
He always was quick to point out all the “interesting” things that happened in the NE and I would make sure that he new what “interesting” things happened in the SE, although his geographic of the SE was sometimes suspect (forest lawn is in the SE Bill).
    You will be missed.

My deepest and most sincere condolences on the loss of your husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, co-worker and friend. While I only worked with Bill for a few years, I watched as he created a following of loyal admirers who followed him through his career moves. I have learned that most people don’t follow someone they don’t admire. Bill was honest, genuine and fair and he will be missed.

  28. To Dave. Jim Northey year Dave. I attended the service for your father today. I wish I knew him as well as many in attendance did. I just wanted to reflect back on a time when my son Shawn was very sick and I approached you during a practice about that.

Your first words Dave were of immediate care and you offered anything you could to help. Sounds very much about what I heard your father stood for – Compassion was clearly one of many words I heard today – and you showed that for my son in a difficult time.

Your total open honesty about the last week you shared with your Dad – to let go or not – was so emotional and such a lesson for all. I feel humbled by your sharing and I am sure your Dad would be proud of what you said and why.

I am sorry for your family’s loss – he really was a great man. Hopefully he and Suds are sipping a cool one exchanging Lacrosse stories. No more pain for either.
