STREKAF, Doris

January 1, 1923 – Regina, Saskatchewan
October 30, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta

Doris Strekaf of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at the age of 95 years.

Doris was universally viewed by everyone who knew her as one of the kindest and most considerate people they ever met. She was born on January 1, 1923 in Regina, Saskatchewan to Mary and Vlady Peskleway and raised on a farm near Scout Lake, Saskatchewan as the eldest of seven children. She worked hard throughout her life, starting when she left school early to help raise her younger siblings. She moved to Regina and worked as a waitress and in hospital laundry before she married Paul Strekaf in January 1957. They were a devoted couple who were happily married for 47 years until Paul died in 2004.

Doris and Paul doted on their daughter Jo’Anne and moved to Calgary in 1992 to be close to her and her family. They were so proud of their grandchildren Mary, Ellen and Paul.

Doris had strong faith and was actively involved with the Catholic Women’s League at the St. Anne Parish in Regina and later at St Gerard’s in Calgary. She always saw and brought out the best in other people. She was generous with her time and had many friends. Doris was always the first to volunteer and was a long time member of the Girl Guides of Canada Trefoil Guild. She was an excellent cook, talented seamstress and an avid gardener.

Doris is survived by her sister Mary; daughter Jo’Anne (John Wilson); grandchildren Mary, Ellen and Paul Archer; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Doris was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and siblings Vlady, Adam, George, William and Lillian.

Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes to celebrate Doris’s life at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Gerard’s Catholic Church (8944 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, November 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the church.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Doris’ life will be held at St. Anne Parish (1701 Cowan Crescent, Regina, SK) on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. with interment of her ashes to follow at the Regina Cemetery.
