STEWART, John Arthur

April 19, 1924 – Calgary, Alberta
January 25, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

John Arthur Stewart passed away peacefully at the age of 94 at the Colonel Belcher Veterans Care facility surrounded by his family on January 25, 2019.

John was born in Calgary and attended McDougall School, Central School, James Short and Western Canada High School. He enjoyed playing on the football and hockey teams.

John enlisted in the RCAF in December 1942 and completed 3 years of service.  He had a strong passion for planes of this era that was reflected in the many balsa wood models he built as well as numerous books and novels on this subject.

John completed his degree in chemical engineering from the University Of Tulsa, Oklahoma. After working for Tretolite, and Westcoast Transmission, John returned to school and obtained an MBA at Simon Fraser University.  He went on to operate his own engineering firm for many years.

After retiring, he enjoyed many years of hiking, camping and fishing with the family throughout Western Canada. John spent countless happy hours in his woodworking shop, and always had a project on the go.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Dorothy; his children, Bruce (Kathleen) Laurie (Patrick) Barb (Scott) and James; his grandchildren Jesse, Carley, Tara and Kelsey; and great grandchildren Sean, Isaac, Cordelia and Olivia.

“Our bonny husband, dad, grandfather, and great grandfather left us on Robbie Burns Day, and we will always remember him as we celebrate this famous Scottish day.”

A Private Family Gathering will be held. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Friends of the Colonel Belcher Society at the Calgary Health Trust-FOCBS Fund www.calgaryhealthtrust.ca or the CNIB www.cnib.ca

A wonderful neighbor that everyone loved. The world needs more good people like you John. Warmth and genuine concern for others mixed with undying curiosity. I will miss you. And so will many others who were lucky enough to have been touched by your spirit. A reminder that we are not here forever. May more of us make as good use of our time as you did. Congratulations on a successful life in so many ways.
